BASEBALL DROPS SERIES OPENER AT NEW HAVEN, 11-5

West Haven, Conn. – The top seven hitters in the lineup each had at least two hits to lead the University of New Haven to an 11-5 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Frank Vieira Field.

The Dolphins struck first with two runs on two hits and a New Haven error in the first inning. Freshman left fielder Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) was hit by a pitch to open the game and then took second on a one-out wild pitch. After a single to center by sophomore center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day), Cox scored as junior shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) reached on an error by the shortstop. Two batters later, junior catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) singled to right field to drive in Swetman from second.

New Haven evened the score at two in the bottom of the first. Center fielder Brendan O'Reilly doubled to left field and came all the way around to score on an error by the left fielder to start the frame. First baseman Zach Collett singled to center with one out, stole second with two outs and scored on a single to left by left fielder Kyle Cullen.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the third on two hits. Swetman singled to center with one out, took second on a groundout and scored on a single to right by West.

The Chargers took the lead in the bottom of the inning with two runs on three hits. O'Reilly led off with a single to left and moved to second on a walk by shortstop Tom Walraven. After an out, designated hitter Robert Petrillo singled to left center to drive in O'Reilly. Following a pop out, catcher TJ Riccio singled to right to plate Collett, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

New Haven extended its lead in the fourth with one run on one hit. Second baseman Nick Russo led off with a double down the left field line, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly to center by third baseman Jack Zagaja.

The Chargers added one run in the fifth on three one-out hits. Petrillo singled to center, advanced to third on a single to left by Cullen and scored on a single to left by Riccio.

Le Moyne trimmed its deficit to 6-4 with one run on two hits in the sixth. Senior third baseman Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy-Albany) singled to center with one out, moved to second on a walk, took third on a groundout and scored on a single to the shortstop by Cox.

New Haven got the run back in the bottom of the inning. O'Reilly struck out swinging with two outs, but reached first on a wild pitch. After stealing second, he scored on a single to center by Walraven.

The Dolphins answered with one run on two hits in the seventh inning. Swetman doubled down the right field line with one out and came around to score on a single to center by redshirt sophomore designated hitter Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant).

New Haven put the game away with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame. Petrillo singled to left with one out and then Cullen walked. Riccio followed with a single to right to drive in Petrillo. Russo then singled to the third baseman to plate Cullen. After a single by Zagaja to load the bases, right fielder Eddie Tammaro grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Riccio.

The Chargers completed the game's scoring with a run on two hits in the eighth. Walraven singled to right to start the frame, took second on a wild pitch and scored on a triple to right by Collett.

Senior lefty Ryan Davis (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) was tagged with his second loss of the season after giving up five runs on eight hits over four innings, while striking out five. Cox and West each had three of Le Moyne's 13 hits. Vincent Aprea earned his fourth win of the year after tossing five and two-thirds innings, during which he allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out one.

Le Moyne (12-18, 5-7 NE-10, 5-7 SW), which has dropped five of its last six games, concludes its series with the Chargers on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
