West Haven, Conn. – Senior third baseman/second baseman
Max Nagelsmith (Duanesburg, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) drove in the winning run in the top of the 13th inning to give the Le Moyne College baseball team a 6-5 win in the second game of a doubleheader against the University of New Haven on Sunday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field. The Chargers won the opening game of the Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader, 2-1.
New Haven started the scoring in the nightcap with two runs on three hits in the fourth inning. With two outs, left fielder Kyle Cullen doubled down the left field line and then came around to score on a double to left center by catcher TJ Riccio. Second baseman Nick Russo followed with a single to center to drive in Riccio.
The Dolphins took the lead with four runs on just two hits in the sixth inning. Sophomore catcher
Matt Buroni (Marlborough, Mass./Marlborough) drew a walk to open the frame, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout and then scored as junior second baseman/shortstop
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) reached on a fielder's choice. Sophomore center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) singled to center and junior catcher/designated hitter
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) was hit by a pitch around an out to load the bases. Freshman left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) then drew a walk to force in Charbonneau with the tying run. Nagelsmith followed with a single to right field to drive in DiNorcia and West.
The Chargers regained the lead with three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth. First baseman Zach Collett led off with a single to third base and moved to second on a single to center by designated hitter Robert Petrillo. After each runner moved up on balk, Cullen lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Collett. Riccio followed with a single to center to knock in Petrillo to tie the game and force a Le Moyne pitching change. Russo greeted the new pitcher with a double down the left field line, while Riccio was throw out at home. Third baseman Jack Zagaja followed with a single to second base to plate Russo with the go-ahead run.
Le Moyne knotted the score at five apiece in the eighth inning. Pittman drew a walk with one out and advanced to third on a single to right by Nagelsmith. After a New Haven pitching change, senior right fielder
Jeremy Mathers (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger/Onondaga C.C.) knocked in Pittman with the tying run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
Following four scoreless innings, the Dolphins scored the winning run in the top of the 13th on two hits. West led off with a single to center and moved to second on a wild pitch. After taking third on a sacrifice bunt by Pittman, West scored on a single to left field by Nagelsmith.

Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna), who loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the 13th, earned the win after tossing four scoreless innings, while striking out two. DiNorcia and Nagelsmith each had three of Le Moyne's 11 hits. Will Aldam took the loss for the Chargers after yielding one run on three hits over three innings.
In the first game, New Haven took advantage of two Le Moyne errors to score its two runs. In the first inning, center fielder Brendan O'Reilly reached on an error by the third baseman to start the frame and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Petrillo then doubled to left field with two outs to drive in O'Reilly.
The Chargers scored the eventual game-winning run on two hits and a Le Moyne error in the third inning. Shortstop Tom Walraven doubled to right field with one out and advanced to third on an error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt. Collett followed with a single to left to plate Walraven.

Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) singled to center field to open the inning. With two outs, junior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) reached on an error by the third baseman, which allowed Cox to race around from first to score.
Sophomore righty
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) was the tough-luck loser after yielding the two unearned runs on five hits over eight innings, while striking out seven. David Palmer earned his first win in five decisions after allowing just one unearned run on two hits over seven innings, while striking out two. Kellen Croce tossed the final two innings, while striking out three, to pick up his second save.
Le Moyne (13-19, 6-8 NE-10, 6-8 SW), which snapped a four-game losing streak with the nightcap victory, returns to the diamond on Tuesday at The College of Saint Rose at 3:30 p.m.
