Syracuse, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder
Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) scored his fourth goal of the game with 1:30 left in overtime to give the third-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team an 8-7 victory over fourth-ranked and third-seeded Merrimack College in the semifinals of the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
Le Moyne (16-2) advances to its eighth NCAA Championship game on Sunday, May 24 at 1:00 p.m. at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania against the winner of the South Region, Limestone College or Lake Erie College. The Dolphins are 4-3 in their seven previous championship games, including an 11-10 double-overtime win over Limestone for their first title in 2004.
Each team had a chance to win the game in the final 35 seconds of the fourth quarter, but Merrimack missed a shot wide and the Dolphins turned the ball over, resulting in the overtime period.
Merrimack, which won seven of the 18 faceoffs in regulation, won the opening faceoff of the fourth quarter and called timeout with 3:45 left. After working the ball around, Max Allen got off a shot from the right side, but senior goalkeeper
Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.) smothered the low shot. The Dolphins cleared the ball and called a timeout of their own with 2:21 to play. From the left side, Rogers dodged towards the goal and fired a shot into the back of the net to send the Dolphins to Philadelphia.
Merrimack started the game's scoring just 65 seconds into the contest as Tucker Schwarz netted his 43rd goal of the season off a feed from Jamie Shand.
The Dolphins, more specifically Rogers, answered with back-to-back goals to take their first lead of the game. With just eight seconds left on a Merrimack unnecessary roughness penalty, Rogers tallied his 26th goal of the campaign with 8:47 remaining in the opening quarter after receiving a pass from senior attackman
Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge). Following a Merrimack turnover, Rogers recorded an unassisted goal with 5:30 to go for a 2-1 lead.
The Warriors knotted the score at two apiece with 1:23 left as Shand fed Allen for his 47th goal of the year.
Sophomore midfielder/attackman
Alex O'Brien (Hanson, Mass./Boston College High) put the Dolphins back in front with his 14th goal of the season with 11:13 left in the second quarter. The goal marked the only one of the quarter as the Dolphins took a 3-2 lead into the intermission.
After being shutout in the second quarter, the Warriors returned the favor in the third quarter, while scoring two goals to take the lead. Schwarz tied the score at three with 9:09 left in the period, snapping his team's scoring drought at 22:14. Just over two minutes later, Shand picked up his 17th goal after taking a pass from Ryan Poirier.
Following 28:25 without a goal, Le Moyne evened the score at four apiece as Rogers tallied his second extra-man goal of the contest, just 12 seconds into the situation, with 12:48 remaining in the fourth quarter.
Poirier put the Warriors back in front 46 seconds later with an unassisted marker.
The Dolphins recorded two goals in 88 seconds to take their first lead since the beginning of the third quarter. Senior midfielder
Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) recorded his 46th goal of the campaign with 11:06 left in regulation after collecting a pass from junior attackman
Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa). O'Brien, Le Moyne's only multi-goal scorer in the contest, put the Dolphins up 6-5 with 9:38 remaining to cap an 88-second possession.
Merrimack countered with two goals in just under four minutes to take the lead back. Just four seconds after a timeout by the Warriors, Poirier tied the score at six with his second goal of the afternoon with 7:39 remaining. After a Le Moyne turnover, Allen tallied his 48th goal of the year for a 7-6 edge with 3:46 left.
The Dolphins were awarded the ensuing faceoff and called timeout 13 seconds later. After Corapi sent a shot high with 2:48 to go, senior attackman
Chris Breiner (Troy, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) cut across the front of the goal from the right side and sent the ball into the net for the 16th time this year with 2:06 to play to tie the score for the seventh and final time.
Krawec finished the game with 11 saves to earn his 16th win of the season between the pipes.
Dom Madonna turned away nine shots in the setback for the Warriors, including seven in the opening 30 minutes. Merrimack recorded a 38-34 edge in shots, including 19-13 after halftime, while Le Moyne held a 21-15 advantage in ground balls.
