Natalie Casson (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman) recorded 29 kills to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to wins over Holy Family University and Caldwell University on Friday on the first day of the Wilmington Wildcat Regional Invitational at the WU Athletics Complex. The Dolphins registered a 3-2 victory in their afternoon match against Holy Family and then defeated Caldwell, 3-0, in the evening.
Against Holy Family, the Dolphins dropped the first set, 25-15, the first time they've trailed a match this season. They bounced back and took the second set, 25-20, to even the match at one apiece. After the Dolphins took a 2-1 lead with a 25-22 victory in the third set, the Tigers stayed alive in the match with a 25-21 win in the fourth set. Le Moyne captured the match with a 15-7 win in the fifth set.
Casson led the Dolphins with 15 kills and 11 digs for her second double-double of the season. Freshman right side
Jessica Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) tallied 13 kills, two blocks and a pair of digs. Sophomore setter
Kendall Corcoran (Fort Salonga, N.Y./Kings Park) dished out a career-high 42 assists, while adding eight digs, two kills and a block. Junior libero
Maura Fay (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) led the team defensively with 16 digs, while junior outside hitter
Andrea Buchanan (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) added 14 digs and eight kills.
Emma Herring and Rachel Johnson each had 11 kills to lead the Tigers offensively, while Johnson registered 10 digs and three blocks. Natalie Stewart and Kacie Brien directed the Holy Family offense with 20 and 14 assists, respectively, while Candyce Riley and Chase Wassel tallied 14 and 12 digs, respectively.
Le Moyne opened the match against Caldwell with a 25-18 victory in the first set. The Dolphins doubled their lead with a 25-23 win in the second set and then closed out their second victory over the Cougars in five days with a 25-21 victory in the third set.
After hitting .361 against Holy Family, Casson hit .481 against Caldwell en route to 14 kills. She added three service aces and a pair of digs. Sophomore middle hitter
Danica Durdines (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos) tallied 10 kills and Miller posted eight kills, two service aces, two blocks and two digs. Corcoran dished out a three-set career-high 35 assists and contributed seven digs, while Fay recorded 16 digs to lead the defense.
Taryn Auyong led the Cougars in the setback with 14 kills and four digs. Gabrielle Bennett directed the offense with 16 assists, while Jessica Mitchell registered 12 digs.
Le Moyne (6-0), which has won its first six matches for the first time since the 2011 season and has its longest win streak since posting nine straight wins from September 1, 2012 to September 16, completes play at the Wildcat Regional on Saturday against Chestnut Hill College (12:00 p.m.) and the host Wildcats (4:00 p.m.).
