Albany, N.Y. – Romaine Williamson scored 10 minutes into the second half to give The College of Saint Rose a 2-1 victory over the Le Moyne College men's soccer team on Wednesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Sullivan Field.
The Dolphins controlled play throughout the opening 34 minutes of action, registering all eight shots taken in the span, including a pair put on target.
After putting a pair of shots wide of the frame, Saint Rose struck for the game's first goal with 4:14 remaining in the first half. Off two quick touches from the left side by Ryan Rooney and Nick Iuorno, Joshua Hanif headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net from 10 yards out off the right corner of the goal box.
Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece just 83 seconds into the second half. Following a Saint Rose foul from outside the top right corner of the penalty box, redshirt senior midfielder
Cal Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) sent the free kick in front of the goal, where senior back
Mark Gentile (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne) headed the ball into the upper left corner of the net from the top of the goal box.
Only eight minutes later, the Golden Knights regained the lead. Off a clear attempt by the Dolphins, Williamson intercepted the ball and carried it to the right endline before firing a shot into the far left netting for his fourth goal of the year.
The Dolphins got off eight shots over the final 34 minutes, including three put on target, but could not find the back of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) recorded one save between the pipes in the loss. Colan Balkwell registered five saves, including the three in the second half, to earn the victory. The Dolphins posted a 17-10 advantage in shots and took nine of the game's 10 corner kicks.
Le Moyne (4-2, 1-2 NE-10), which had posted 15 straight victories against the Golden Knights since a 2-0 loss in 1991, returns to the field on Saturday at eighth-ranked Merrimack College at 6:00 p.m.
