Syracuse, N.Y. – Redshirt senior midfielder
Cal Filtch (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) set up all three goals to lead the Le Moyne College men's soccer team to a 3-1 come-from-behind victory over Saint Anselm College on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.
After the Dolphins registered a 5-1 advantage in shots over the opening 27 minutes of the game, the Hawks netted the game's first goal on the first shot put on net. Following a high shot by the Dolphins, Saint Anselm goalkeeper Stephen McLeod sent the goal kick into the middle of the field to Jack Heintzelman, who turned and sent the ball into the offensive third of the field. Zachary Heckt collected the ball behind two Le Moyne defenders and dribbled towards the net. Once confronted by the goalkeeper, he slipped a shot inside the right post at the 27:55 mark for his third goal of the season.
Saint Anselm put two more shots on goal over the final 15 minutes of the first half, but sophomore goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) was able to corral both.
The Dolphins first scoring chance of the game came 5:44 into the second half, but McLeod was able to turn away a point-blank header by redshirt sophomore midfielder
Marcello Palucci (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep/Florida International).
Le Moyne evened the score at one apiece with just over 31 minutes left in the contest. Off a corner kick from the right side by Filtch, graduate student forward
Fabian Egger (Planegg, Germany/Feodor-Lynen Gymnasium/Webber International) headed the ball into the back of the net at the far left post for his first tally of the season. Egger, who tallied two goals in Le Moyne's 3-2 victory at Saint Anselm last year, gave the Dolphins the lead just 1:42 later in similar fashion. Off another corner kick by Filtch from the right side, Egger headed the ball from the top of the goal box into the center of the goal at the 60:39 mark.
The Dolphins delivered the final margin off another corner kick with 5:30 remaining. Off the kick from the right side, senior back
Mark Gentile (Walworth, N.Y./Wayne) was able to flick the ball from the right post to the left post, where senior back
Jack Ball (Sunbury, Middlesex/Bishop Wand/Bryant & Stratton) was able to deposit the ball into the back of the net for his second marker of the year. With the three assists in the contest, Filtch is the first Dolphin to accomplish that feat in over 13 seasons.
Beaury finished the game with the two first-half saves to record his 18th career win between the pipes. McLeod tallied six saves, all in the second half, in the setback. Le Moyne registered a 19-7 advantage in shots, including a 14-3 mark in the second half, while taking seven of the game's eight corner kicks.
Le Moyne (6-2, 3-2 NE-10), which improved to 4-0 at home this season and has won seven straight at Ted Grant Field dating back to last year, returns to action on Saturday at fourth-ranked Southern New Hampshire University at 1:00 p.m. The Penmen, who are off to a 7-0 start to the season and are the only undefeated team remaining in the NE-10 after the Dolphins knocked off Merrimack last Saturday, are 46-1-3 in their last 50 games (28-1-1 in NE-10 action), with the lone loss coming to the Dolphins last October 25.
