MEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO #12 SAINT ANSELM, 74-61

Syracuse, N.Y. – Mike McCahey recorded a double-double to lead 12th-ranked Saint Anselm College to a 74-61 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference play at Ted Grant Court.
 
Sophomore guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy), who came off the bench for the first time this season, made all five of Le Moyne's three-pointers en route to a game-high 18 points. Classmate Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) tallied 13 points, five rebounds a season-best two rebounds, while junior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) pulled down a career high-tying 10 rebounds and scored nine points.

McCahey led the Hawks with 14 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, nine of which he pulled down in the first half. Victor Joshua made 8-of-11 shots en route to a game-best 18 points, 12 of which came after halftime. Harrison Taggart posted 13 points and four assists, while Chris Braley recorded 11 points and four rebounds.

The Hawks scored the first seven points of the game and forced a Le Moyne timeout with 16:33 left following a Taggart jumper. Following a jumper in the paint by sophomore guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) to get the Dolphins within 9-4, Saint Anselm tallied 14 straight points to take its largest lead of the game with 11:56 remaining. McCahey scored six points in the stretch, while Tim Guers and Taggart each added a three-pointer.

Le Moyne answered with 10 of the next 12 points to trim its deficit to 11 with 8:26 to go. Hyland capped the streak with back-to-back three-pointers.

Following a 6-0 spurt by the Hawks to push their lead back to 17, the Dolphins recorded a 9-2 run to get within 10 with 3:24 left. Hyland started the run with a three-pointer and then sophomore forward Zach Quattro (Ambler, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), Sangster and Kaigler scored in the paint.

After three points each from Taggart and Braley around a Kaigler lay-up, Buczek got the Dolphins within 39-27 at halftime with a lay-up with four seconds left.

Le Moyne opened the second half with the first six points to cut its deficit in half  with 17:28 left as Buczek had a pair of put-back lay-ups around a Sangster jumper.

The teams then went back and forth over the next four minutes with Hyland knocking down a three-pointer with 13:27 left to get the Dolphins within 46-41.

Saint Anselm countered with eight of the next 10 points to push its lead back to double digits. Cody Ball recorded five of the points, while Ryan Hartung nailed a three-pointer.

After senior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and Kaigler made lay-ups to get the Dolphins within single digits for the final time, Saint Anselm rattled off 16 of the next 20 points over five minutes to put the game away. Joshua tallied eight of the points, while McCahey scored three, Ball nailed a three-pointer and Braley made a lay-up.

Le Moyne closed out the game with 10 of the last 14 points. Lovell netted half of the points over the final thee minutes.

Le Moyne (5-9, 3-6 NE-10), which has dropped four games to the Hawks in the last 22 months, remains home to face Merrimack College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
