WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS 2016 WITH 47-38 WIN OVER SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) recorded her second straight double-double to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 47-38 win over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

The Dolphins have limited their last two opponents to 75 total points (after holding Mansfield to 37 on Wednesday), their lowest combined total in back-to-back games since yielding just 73 points to Felician (33) and Cheyney (40) midway through the 2007-08 season. It marks the first time since the program's first season, 1976-77, that the Dolphins held consecutive opponents under 40 points (Jefferson CC 35, Alfred 32), while it is the first time the Dolphins have held a conference opponent under 40 points since a 40-33 win at Saint Anselm on January 5, 2011.

Brown registered a game-high 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Senior guard Lauren Salzbrenner (Sheboygan, Wis./Sheboygan North) scored eight of her 12 points in the second half, while classmate Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, scored nine points and posted two assists and two steals.

Amanda Pfohl came off the bench to lead the Owls offensively with 10 second-half points. Jackie Beathea, who ranks near the top of the national rankings in rebounds per game, collected a game-high 21 rebounds, including 15 in the first half, while adding four points (her lowest total of the season and 8.5 below her season average) and three blocked shots before fouling out.

After the teams traded baskets following two scoreless minutes to start the game, the Dolphins rattled off 12 of the next 15 points over 6:07 to take control of the contest. Andrade and Salzbrenner each tallied four points in the span.

Danielle Powell scored four points in the last 37 seconds of the quarter to get the Owls within 14-9.

Following a jumper by Brown to start the scoring in the second quarter, Southern Connecticut recorded a 9-1 run to take the lead, 18-17, with 2:26 left. Chandler Williams started the run with a three-pointer and then Nicole Grossbard made four free throws around a jumper by Maria Weselyj.

The Dolphins scored the final five points of the half to take a 22-18 lead into the intermission. Brown made two free throws and then freshman guard Melanie Quijano (San Diego, Calif./Horizon Christian) buried a three-pointer.

After Beathea cut her team's deficit in half with a lay-up 47 seconds into the third quarter, the Dolphins put together a 10-2 run to take their largest lead of the game. Brown made a pair of shots in the paint, Salzbrenner drained a three-pointer and then sophomore forward Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) recorded a conventional three-point play after Brown saved the ball from going out-of-bounds.

Southern Connecticut State registered a 14-3 run over the last 3:25 of the third quarter and the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to take the lead. Pfohl drained back-to-back three-pointers to force a Le Moyne timeout and then converted a fast-break lay-up 2:14 later to get the Owls within 33-30. After Andrade and Powell traded baskets to close out the third quarter, Pfohl made another lay-up to pull the Owls within 35-34 with 7:39 remaining in the fourth. Murphy Murad then converted two foul shots with 6:00 left to put the Owls up 36-35.

Andrade answered 16 seconds later with a put-back lay-up to regain the lead for the Dolphins and then fed sophomore forward Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) for a baseline jumper with 4:34 to go for a three-point advantage.

After Grossbard made a fast-break lay-up for Southern Connecticut's final points with 3:37 left, the Dolphins scored the last eight points of the game. Following three scoreless minutes, Salzbrenner nailed a three-pointer. Salzbrenner and Brown then each went 2-for-2 from the foul line to push the margin to eight. Andrade completed the game's scoring with a free throw with 11 seconds left.

Le Moyne (5-7, 2-4 NE-10), which defeated the Owls at home for just the fourth time in 14 matchups as Northeast-10 foes, starts crossover play on Wednesday at Stonehill College at 5:30 p.m.
