Manchester, N.H. - Rodney Sanders registered 20 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to an 83-53 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at the SNHU Fieldhouse.
Senior guard
Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) was one of four Dolphins to score in double-digits with 13 points, while adding four assists and three rebounds. Junior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) and
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) tallied 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Sanders led three Penmen in double-figures with his 20 points, 15 of which he scored in the first half, while adding four rebounds. Chris Walters tallied 18 points, including 14 in the second half, and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds. Devin Gilligan added 10 points and five rebounds.
The teams went back and forth over the opening nine minutes of the game with the lead changing hands eight times and the score being tied four times.
After Buczek gave the Dolphins an 18-17 lead with 11:07 left in the half, the Penmen scored five straight points to take the lead for good and 16 of the next 19 points for their first double-digit lead of the game. Sanders tallied seven of the points, while four others accounted for the other nine.
The Dolphins answered with nine straight points in 2:19 to cut their deficit to three with 2:20 left in the half. Hyland bookended the streak with a three-pointer and a lay-up, while Lovell and Buczek added lay-ups.
Southern New Hampshire scored four of the last six points of the half to take a 37-32 lead into the intermission.
After the teams split the first 10 points of the second half, Southern New Hampshire scored 13 straight points to blow the game open. Sanders, Daquaise Andrews and BJ Cardarelli each scored three points in the span.
After the Penmen pushed their advantage to 21 with 10:44 left on two free throws by Sanders, the Dolphins posted seven straight points to get within 14 with 9:29 to go. Hyland made a three-pointer, Buczek followed with two free throws and then Lovell made a fast-break lay-up.
Southern New Hampshire answered with 21 of the game's last 26 points over 8:49 to deliver the final score. Walters and Kostas Mantalvanos each scored five points over the span for the Penmen, while Lovell had four of Le Moyne's five points, including the team's final basket with 8:06 left.
Le Moyne (6-12, 4-9 NE-10), which slips to 1-6 on the road this season, completes cross-division play on Saturday against Franklin Pierce University at 2:00 p.m.
