LATE RALLY COMES UP SHORT AS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE, 52-51

Manchester, N.H. – Southern New Hampshire University withstood a final-minute rally by the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to register a 52-51 victory on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at the SNHU Fieldhouse.

Senior forward Vandell Andrade (Cranston, R.I./St. Mary's-Bay View/Rhode Island College) led the Dolphins with her team-best eighth double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while adding two steals. Junior guard Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) came off the bench to score 13 points as the only other Dolphin to reach double-digits.

Kylie Lorenzen led the Penmen with 14 points (12 in the first half) and nine rebounds. Catherine Stinson tallied 10 of her 13 points in the second.

After the teams split the first 12 points of the game over 4:13, the Dolphins scored seven straight points and 15 of the last 20 points of the quarter to take a 21-11 lead. Demand tallied five points in the stretch, including a three-pointer as the quarter expired, while freshman guard Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) sophomore guard Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) buried three-pointers.

The Penmen opened the second quarter with the first eight points and 12 of the first 14 to even the score at 23-apiece with 2:29 left in the half. Lorenzen accounted for eight of the points, including the tying jumper.

Le Moyne answered with a 5-1 run to regain the lead. Andrade scored the first four points and then Leszyk made a free throw.

Aaliyah Paxton made a jumper with five seconds left to get the Penmen within 28-26 at halftime.

After Andrade opened the scoring in the third quarter, Southern New Hampshire rattled off 11 of the next 13 points to take a 37-32 lead with 4:50 to go in the stanza. Five different Penmen scored in the span with Sara Ryan recording a conventional three-point play for the lead.

Le Moyne countered with five straight points to knot the score at 37 with 3:06 left. Sophomore forward Corinne Poitevien (Bardonia, N.Y./Paramus Catholic (N.J.)) had a conventional three-point play and then senior forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) converted two free throws.

After two points by each team, Stinson scored four points in 33 seconds to give the Penmen a 43-39 lead after three quarters.

Following a lay-up by Southern New Hampshire to start the fourth quarter, the Dolphins scored six straight points to tie the score for the seventh time. Andrade scored the first four points and then Demand made a fast-break lay-up.

After the teams traded lay-ups, the Penmen scored five straight points to take the lead for good. Stinson nailed a three-pointer with 3:23 left for the lead and then Jennifer Shelp made two foul shots with 1:01 to go.

Le Moyne made one final push to get within one point, but could not overcome its deficit. Demand made a lay-up with 45 seconds left to get the Dolphins within 52-49. After sophomore forward Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) blocked a shot out of bounds, Andrade stole the in-bounds pass and raced up court to convert a lay-up with 14.8 seconds left. She was fouled on the play, but missed the ensuing free throw. However, Brown forced a tie-up to give the ball back to the Dolphins with 12.8 seconds left.

After the Dolphins called timeout, they had a three-pointer from the left corner, but it was off the mark and the time expired before anyone could collect the rebound.

Le Moyne (9-10, 6-7 NE-10), which has dropped back-to-back conference games for the first time since early December, closes out cross-division action on Saturday at home against Franklin Pierce University at 12:00 p.m.
