Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior midfielder
Kirsten Colegrove (Athens, Pa./Athens) recorded a pair of assists to lead the Le Moyne College women's soccer team to a Northeast-10 Conference Championships berth with a 2-1 win over Stonehill College in the Northeast-10 Conference regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
With the victory, the Dolphins improve to 9-7-1 overall and 7-6-1 in conference action and claim the seventh seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference Championship. The Dolphins will take on second-seeded American International College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Dolphins in the regular season meeting, 4-1.
Following nine shots over the opening 31 minutes of the game, including a pair that needed to be saved by Stonehill goalkeeper Jamie Block, the Dolphins got on the scoreboard. Off a free kick from the left side by freshman midfielder
Claire Stackel (Watertown, N.Y./Copenhagen), Colegrove tipped the ball towards the goal to senior forward
Rachel Terry (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal), who sent a shot into the lower left corner of the goal for her 13th tally of the season. Terry's 13 goals are the second-most in the conference this season and tied for 16th nationally, while she ranks tied for third in the conference and 24th nationally in points with 28. Her 13 goals are tied for the ninth-most in a single season in the program's history and are the most since the 2010 season, while her 28 points are tied for the 12th-most in a season. The goal also gives her 31 for her career, which is tied with 2016 Golf Wave Hall of Fame selection Gabrielle Curinga '94 for the fifth-most in the program's history.
The Dolphins took the final four shots of the opening half, but could not add to their lead.
After a shot by each team over the opening 16 minutes of the second half, the Dolphins doubled their lead. Off a corner kick from the right side by Colegrove, sophomore midfielder
Kelsi Fredericks (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia/SUNY Oswego) headed the ball from the top of the goal box into the right side of the net at the 61:53 mark for her fourth goal of the year. The assist was Colegrove's 11th of the season, which is the most in the conference and tied for the fourth-most nationally. The 11 assists are tied for the third-most in a season in the program's history and are two shy of the program's record. Additionally, Colegrove now has 18 assists in her career, which is tied for the third-most in the program's history and the most since the mid-1990s.
Stonehill, which entered the game third in the conference, cut its deficit in half with 73:09 eclipsed in the game. After tracking down a loose ball on the right side of the penalty box, Lydia Beiter fired a shot from 15 yards out into the lower left side of the goal for her third marker of the season.
Just 65 seconds later, Nicole Geraghty had a close range shot on target, but sophomore goalkeeper
Anastasija Cumika (Riga, Latvia/Riga Kengarags/West Florida) was able to punch the attempt away to keep the Dolphins in front.
Each of Stonehill's final three attempts weren't on target.
Cumika finished the game with four saves, including three in the second half, to earn her ninth victory of the season between the pipes. The nine wins are tied for the third-most in a season in the program's history. Block made three saves in each half in the setback for the Skyhawks, who lost for the first time this season when scoring a goal. Le Moyne registered a 22-10 advantage in shots, including a 14-2 mark in the first half, while posting a 12-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Prior to the game, Terry and classmate
Alyssa Ricci (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) were honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
