NEW HAVEN RALLIES FOR 65-63 OVERTIME WIN OVER MEN’S BASKETBALL

West Haven, Conn. – Mihailo Vasic scored eight points in overtime to lead the University of New Haven to a 65-63 win over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in the Northeast-10 Conference opener on Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium.

Junior forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) led the Dolphins with 14 points and six rebounds off the bench, including seven points and five rebounds in the second half. Junior guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) and junior forward Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) each recorded 11 points.

Vasic finished the game with 16 points and added 11 rebounds, including six on the offensive end. Kessly Felizor also tallied a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 18 rebounds. Danny Upchurch led all players in the game with 21 points, while adding six rebounds and four assists. Elijah Bailey registered 12 points, including nine in the first half.

New Haven opened the game with the first eight points over the first 4:03. Felizor made a free throw, Upchurch hit a three-pointer and two free throws and then Bailey made a lay-up.

The Dolphins answered with a 10-2 run to even the score at 10 apiece. Eisendorf scored the first five points, Hyland buried a three-pointer and then junior guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) tied the score with a lay-up.

After the teams traded baskets over 2:16, the Dolphins rattled off eight of the next 10 points for a five-point advantage. Senior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) made a lay-up, Hyland drilled a three-pointer and then registered a conventional three-point play.

Following a three-point play by Bailey to get the Chargers within 24-22 with 4:44 left in the opening half, Le Moyne posted an 8-1 run to take its largest lead of the half. Junior guard Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) bookended the run with lay-ups, while Sangster made a lay-up and Buczek hit two free throws in the middle.

Felizor and Upchurch recorded three points each around a three-point play by Kaigler to get the Chargers within 35-29 at halftime.

After the teams split the first four points of the half, sophomore guard C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) knocked down a three-pointer and Kaigler had a put-back lay-up to give Le Moyne its largest lead of the game, 42-31, with 15:29 remaining.

Following back-and-forth play over the next 5:45, which resulted in a 49-39 Le Moyne lead, the Chargers rattled off 11 of the next 13 points to get within one points with 5:03 remaining. Bailey started the run with a three-pointer, Vasic tallied six of the points and Upchurch made a lay-up.

After Kaigler scored the game's next three points over a span of two possessions to push Le Moyne's lead back to four points with 2:42 left, New Haven tallied six straight points to take its first lead since the 10:40 mark of the first half. Felizor recorded back-to-back lay-ups to tie the score with 1:20 left and then Upchurch converted a lay-up with 52 seconds left for the lead.

After Hyland stole an inbounds pass with 30 seconds left, Kaigler made two free throws with 21.8 seconds left to tie the score at 56. Kaigler then forced Upchurch to miss a three-pointer at the buzzer, sending the game to overtime.

The Chargers started overtime with the first seven points. Vasic made two lay-ups, Felizor hit a free throw and then Vasic made another lay-up. Kaigler got the Dolphins on the scoreboard in the overtime period with two free throws with 1:50 left, but Vasic answered with another lay-up with 1:23 to go.

Chambers followed with a jumper and Asuncion-Byrd nailed a three-pointer with 36 seconds left to get the Dolphins within two. Vasic went to the foul line for two shots with six seconds left, but missed both attempts. The Dolphins pushed the ball up court, but turned the ball over on a drive to the basket.

Le Moyne (2-1, 0-1 NE-10) opens its home schedule on Saturday against Pace University at 2:00 p.m.
