West Haven, Conn. – Freshman guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) flirted with a triple-double to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 72-56 win over the University of New Haven on Wednesday night in the Northeast-10 Conference opener at Charger Gymnasium.
Roberts finished with a season-best 23 points, including seven in the fourth quarter, nine assists and eight rebounds. Senior guard
Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) registered 16 points, including 12 in the opening half. Junior forward
Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) also neared a triple-double with 14 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven blocks, which is tied for the ninth-most in the program's history and the most since Courtney Coryea '10 also tallied seven at Charger Gym on January 31, 2009.
Alexandria Kerr led the Chargers in the loss with a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds, including six points and seven rebounds in the fourth quarter. Sade King was the only other Charger in double figures with 17 points, including nine in the first quarter, while adding five assists.
In the first quarter, the teams traded 5-0 runs on a pair occasions and ended the quarter tied at 15, the fourth and final time of the game. Roberts and Demand combined to score and assist on all 15 points as Roberts had six points and four assists and Demand tallied nine points and two assists.
The Dolphins opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run to take the lead for good. Roberts converted a lay-up and then Dobrovosky made a pair of shots in the paint. Following a 4-2 spurt by New Haven, the Dolphins rattled off a 12-2 jaunt to open up a 35-21 lead. Freshman guard
Liz Millea (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown) converted a pair of lay-ups in the run, while Roberts and Demand buried three-pointers and Dobrovosky made a lay-up.
Allieyah Cubbage hit a jumper to pull the Chargers within 35-23 at halftime.
After outscoring the Chargers 20-8 in the second quarter, the Dolphins blew the game open by recording a 22-11 advantage in scoring in the third quarter. Following a 7-5 spurt by the Chargers to start the quarter, the Dolphins tallied 17 of the last 21 points over the final 7:28 of the quarter to take a game-high 23-point lead. Nicole Riddick (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/UMass Lowell) each scored four points and Dobrovosky converted a lay-up.
New Haven opened the fourth quarter with the first 10 points to cut its deficit to 13,
57-44. Kerr had five of the points, while India Dotson recorded a conventional three-point play and Cubbage made a lay-up.
The teams traded points over the final 6:47 with Le Moyne's lead bouncing between 12 and 17 points.
Le Moyne (2-1, 1-0 NE-10) opens the home portion of its conference schedule on Saturday against Pace University at 12:00 p.m.
