MEN’S BASKETBALL USES BALANCED SCORING TO DEFEAT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL, 62-49

Springfield, Mass. – The Le Moyne College men's basketball team used balanced scoring to defeat American International College, 62-49, on Tuesday night in Northeast-10 Conference action at Butova Gymnasium.

Sophomore guard C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) led the Dolphins in scoring with 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Junior guard Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) registered nine points, a career-best six assists and a career-high five rebounds. Junior guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds, while adding seven points.

Tahlib Swan led the Yellow Jackets in the loss with 13 points. Bruce Spruell tallied 11 points, six rebounds and three assists.

After Richards started the game's scoring with a three-pointer just under three minutes into the game, the Yellow Jackets rattled off 10 of the next 12 points to take their largest lead of the game. Swan had the first four points, Spruell nailed a three-pointer, Jayvon Pitts-Young made a lay-up and Justin Daniel capped the run with a free throw.

The Dolphins answered with a 13-3 run to take a five-point lead of their own. Junior guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) started the streak with a three-pointer, Asuncion-Byrd and junior forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) knocked down jumpers, Richards followed with a three-pointer and then Asuncion-Byrd buried a three-pointer.

American International countered with seven straight points to take the lead back with 4:26 remaining in the half. Juwan Moody made two free throws, Swan made a three-pointer and then Spruell had a tip-in for the lead.

After Spruell gave AIC a 23-20 lead with 1:52 left with a free throw, the Dolphins tallied the final six points of the half. Sangster canned a three-pointer off a feed from Richards and then fed Asuncion-Byrd for a three-pointer with 39 seconds left.
 
Following a lay-up by Moody to start the scoring in the second half, the Dolphins rattled off 14 of the next 16 points to take control of the game. Freshman forward Tom Brown (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) drilled a pair of three-pointers from the left side in the span, Sangster made a pair of shots, senior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) converted two foul shots and junior forward Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) capped the streak with a put-back lay-up.

American International put together a 15-9 run over six minutes to get within seven with 7:43 left. Kassim Kaba nailed back-to-back three-pointers, Daniel and Zekiah Owens followed with three-pointers and Spruell capped the span with a conventional three-point play. Kaigler tallied four of Le Moyne's nine points in the stretch.

The Dolphins countered with an 11-5 run to put the game away. Eisendorf scored the first four points, Asuncion-Byrd drilled a three-pointer and Buczek scored the final four points.

Le Moyne (6-3, 3-2 NE10) returns to the hardwood on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University at 3:30 p.m.
