MEN’S BASKETBALL RALLIES FOR 78-75 WIN OVER ADELPHI IN HOME FINALE

Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) converted a lay-up with 13 seconds left to give the Le Moyne College men's basketball team the lead as the Dolphins topped Adelphi University, 78-75, in their regular season home finale on Wednesday night at Ted Grant Court.

Junior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) recorded his third double-double of the season with career-highs of 27 points (including 20 in the first half) and 11 rebounds. He went a career-best 6-of-8 from behind the three-point line and is the first Dolphin 6-foot, 6-inches or taller to connect on at least five three-pointers since Kevin Hassett '10 on November 22, 2008. Sophomore guard Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) registered 13 points and three assists in 30 minutes off the bench, while Sangster finished with 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Freshman guard Eriq Jenkins (Windsor, Ontario/Catholic Central) was the fourth Dolphin in double-digits with 10 points, while adding four rebounds. Senior guard Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) tallied eight points, four assists and three rebounds and in the process joined Len Rauch '91 as just the second Dolphin in the program's history to score 1300 points (1306), dish out 350 assists (384) and grab 350 rebounds (351).

Anthony Libroia led the Panthers in the setback with 22 points, five assists and five rebounds. Jack Laffey came off the bench to register 18 points on 6-of-7 shooting from behind the three-point line. Michael Coffey recorded 12 points and three assists, while Manny Suarez was the fourth Panther in double-figures with 10 points. Ryan DeNicola led Adelphi in rebounds with 10.

Buczek and Jenkins each nailed three-pointers in the opening 3:36 around two Buczek free throws as the Dolphins jumped out to an 8-5 lead.

The Panthers responded with 10 straight points to take a seven-point advantage. DeNicola and Libroia scored in the paint and then Laffey and Nick Cambio drained three-pointers for a 15-8 lead.

After Lovell and Coffey traded baskets, the Dolphins scored seven straight points to knot the score at 17 with 9:57 left. Hyland made a three-pointer and a jump shot and then sophomore forward Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) dunked the ball off a feed by Hyland.

Adelphi countered with seven of the next nine points to take a 24-19 lead with 7:38 remaining. Libroia tallied four of the points from the foul line around a three-pointer by Laffey.

Le Moyne answered back with eight points over 2:30 to take the lead. Buczek and Sangster made jump shots, Buczek drained a three-pointer and then Kaigler converted a foul shot.

Buczek pushed the lead to four with his third three-pointer of the half, but Coffey and Tavon Ginyard made lay-ups to tie the score at 30 with 3:13 to go.

Le Moyne tallied the next five points, but the Panthers answered with a 6-1 spurt to tie the game for the sixth time. Buczek buried his fourth three-pointer to start the 5-0 run, but Laffey nailed his third and fourth trifectas to tie the score.

After Hyland and Ginyard traded baskets, Buczek drilled his fifth three-pointer as the half ended to give the Dolphins a 41-38 lead at halftime.

Buczek opened the second half with a three-pointer, but Adelphi answered with the next six points to tie the score for the eighth time. Following a Suarez free throw and a Libroia jumper, Coffey drained a three-pointer to tie the score at 44 with 17:18 left.

After the teams split the next 24 points over 6:54, the Panthers rattled off 11 of the next 13 points to take the largest lead of the game. Suarez made a jumper and a three-pointer, Libroia converted two lay-ups and Ginyard made two foul shots, while Lovell made a lay-up for the Dolphins.

Le Moyne answered with seven straight points and 12 of the next 16 to get within 71-70 with 2:13 left. Jenkins started the comeback with a tip-in, while closing the run with a three-pointer and a fast-break lay-up off a steal in the backcourt. Sophomore guard Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) drained a three-pointer in the stretch and Sangster converted a lay-up.

After Adelphi pushed its lead to three on two occasions over the next 70 seconds, the last of which was at 75-72 with 1:03 left, the Dolphins scored the last six points of the game. Sangster pulled Le Moyne within one with two free throws with 28 seconds left. After Ginyard missed the front end of a "1-and-1" with 21 seconds left, Sangster converted a lay-up with 13 seconds remaining for the lead. Hyland finished the game's scoring with two free throws with two seconds left after Libroia lost the ball out of bounds with three seconds to go. Libroia had a chance to send the game to overtime, but his half-court shot at the buzzer clanged off the rim.

Le Moyne (9-15, 6-12 NE-10), which has won consecutive conference games for the first time this season to move into a tie for the Southwest Division's final NE-10 Championship berth, returns to action on Saturday at Southwest Division-leading Southern Connecticut State University at 3:30 p.m.
