SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON WITH VICTORIES OVER WILMINGTON AND MANSFIELD

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Senior right fielder Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) recorded five hits to lead the Le Moyne College to a pair of season-opening victories on Friday on the first day of the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament at the Grand Park Complex. The Dolphins opened the season with a 9-3 win over Wilmington University and then defeated Mansfield University, 10-5.

Trotta recorded the team's first run of the season with a solo home run down the left field line to start the second inning.

Wilmington took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with two runs on three hits and one Le Moyne error. Third baseman Kaitlyn Slater led off with a triple to left center and came in to score on a bunt single by designated player Sarah Coyne. After an out at first base, Coyne came around to score on a throwing error by the catcher.

The Dolphins evened the score at two apiece with one run on two hits in the third inning. Junior center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) singled up the middle with two outs and came around to score on a single to right center by Trotta.

Le Moyne scored three times on four hits and one Wilmington error in the fourth inning. Freshman designated player Madison DeRita (Higganum, Conn./Mercy) led off with a single up the middle and moved to second on the second out of the inning. Following a single to the shortstop by senior left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield), junior shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) singled through the left side to drive in DeRita. Freshman second baseman Lauren Zazzaro (Southington, Conn./Southington) followed with a single up the middle to plate Reynolds, while Case scored on an error by the catcher.

After Trotta reached on an error by the first baseman to start the fifth inning, junior third baseman Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) blasted a home run to left center.

The Dolphins added two insurance runs on three hits in the seventh inning. Mascari led off with a single to right field and then freshman pinch-runner Lauren Floyd (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) advanced to second on a passed ball. Senior pinch-hitter Mackenzie Dreher (Hinckley, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit) followed with a double to right center to drive in Floyd. Three batters later, Dreher scored on a groundout by Reynolds.

The Wildcats completed the game's scoring with one run on three hits in the bottom of the seventh. Second baseman Jazmeen Llamas singled through the left side with two outs and came around to score on a double to right center by shortstop Cambria Ziemba.

Senior righty Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) recorded the win after striking out three, while giving up three runs and scattering 10 hits. Mascari posted three hits and two RBI, while Trotta had two hits, two RBI and scored twice. Junior catcher Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) also posted two hits in the win. Brooklyn Lachette suffered the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on eight hits over three and two-thirds innings.

In the first inning against Mansfield, the Dolphins scored twice on two hits. After Riley was hit by a pitch with two outs and Trotta followed with a double to left center, Mascari doubled to left center to drive in Riley and Trotta.

The Mountaineers got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second with one run on one hit and two errors. Designated player Megan Miller led off with a single through the right side and then pinch-runner Chantel Hammond advanced to third as second baseman Kayla Hahn reached on a throwing error by the pitcher. After a pair of outs, Hammond scored as catcher Koryn Wickwire reached on an error by the pitch.

The Dolphins got the run back in the top of the third on one hit and a Mansfield error. Riley singled through the left side with two outs, stole second and then scored as Trotta reached on an error by the first baseman.

Mansfield pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the third as first baseman Rachael Sterner hit a solo home run to right center with two outs.

Le Moyne blew the game open with six runs on six hits and two Mansfield errors in the fifth inning. Sophomore catcher Nicole Cerrone (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) and Case opened the frame with singles up the middle. After Zazzaro reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases, Riley doubled down the left field line to plate all three runners. Trotta followed with a single up the middle to knock in Riley. Two batters later, DeRita doubled to left center to plate Trotta. After an out, Reynolds singled to third base to drive in Dreher, who ran for DeRita.

Mansfield got two runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Shortstop Amanda Goodwin doubled to left field with one out and then Miller drew a walk with two outs. Hahn then doubled to right center to score Goodwin and Hammond, who ran for Miller again.

The Dolphins reached double-digits with a run on two hits in the sixth inning. After Riley singled through the left side with one out, Trotta tripled down the right field line to knock in Riley.

Mansfield capped the game's scoring in the bottom of the sixth on two hits. Wickwire doubled to right field with one out and then scored on a two-out single up the middle by center fielder Laura Lawson.

Sophomore pitcher Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) earned the win in the circle after striking out eight batters, while yielding five runs (four earned) on eight hits. Riley and Trotta each recorded three of the team's 11 hits, while Riley scored four times and drove in three runs. Brooke Roys took the loss for the Mountaineers after allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits over four-plus innings.

Le Moyne (2-0), which went unbeaten on opening day for the fifth straight season, returns to action on Saturday against Molloy College at 10:00 a.m. and Slippery Rock University at 12:00 p.m.
