Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) hit a tie-breaking home run as the Le Moyne College softball team defeated Molloy College, 5-3, on Saturday morning on the second day of the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament at the Grand Park Complex. The Dolphins fell to Slippery Rock, in their second game of the day.
The Lions opened the game's scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Third baseman Ashley Fedor singled to right field to start the frame and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Left fielder Tracey Balinskas followed with a double to left field to drive in Fedor.
Molloy extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third with two runs on two hits. Fedor walked, stole second and advanced to third on a bunt single by center fielder Olivia Banulski. Balinskas, whose sister Lindsay was a member of Le Moyne's 2006 East Region championship team and 2008 Northeast-10 Conference title team, then grounded out to plate Fedor. Banulski then scored on a single to left center by right fielder Milan Botte.
Le Moyne evened the score at three apiece on three hits in the top of the fourth inning. Senior right fielder
Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) led off with a single to left center and moved to second on a ground out. After a fly out, sophomore pitcher
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) singled to left to put runners on the corners. Sophomore second baseman
Tess Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) then blasted a three-run home run.
The Dolphins used the long ball to score two runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Riley homered to left center to put the Dolphins up 4-3. Two batters later, junior
Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) drilled her second home run of the season to left center.
Eastman earned her second win of the season after striking out six batters over seven innings, while yielding three runs on eight hits. Riley, Trotta, Eastman and Andrews each recorded two of Le Moyne's 12 hits. Chelsea Hawks took the loss in relief after allowing two runs over one and one-third innings.
After five and one-half scoreless innings to start the game, Slippery Rock scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth on three hits. Left fielder Megan Maloney led off with a single to the shortstop and moved to second on a single to right field by shortstop Katie Kaiser. After a pair of ground outs, second baseman Caitlin Baxter singled to the shortstop to drive in center fielder Emily Nagle, who reached on a fielder's choice as Maloney was retired at third.
Senior
Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) was the tough-luck loser after yielding one run on five hits over six innings, while striking out two. Junior shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) tallied two of Le Moyne's four hits in the contest. Carly DeRose earned the win in the circle after striking out eight over seven innings, while giving up just four hits.
Le Moyne (3-1) closes out its trip with a pair of games on Sunday. The Dolphins take on Shippensburg University at 10:00 a.m. and conclude the weekend against Lock Haven University at 12:00 p.m.
