SECOND-RANKED MEN’S LACROSSE CRUISES TO 24-8 SEASON-OPENING WIN OVER ROCKHURST

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and senior attackman Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) each tallied five points to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team to a 24-8 season-opening win over Rockhurst University on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins jumped on the Hawks right out of the gates, scoring twice in the opening 76 seconds. Graduate student midfielder Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) started the scoring 28 seconds into the game. He added his second goal 48 seconds later.

Rogers and sophomore attackman Justin Kesselring (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) followed with two goals each around a goal by Jenkins as the Dolphins took a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Senior attackmen Andrew Jackson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger) and Logan Thomas (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.) and Jenkins recorded assists during the span.

Le Moyne extended its lead to 12-0 over the first 8:11 of the second quarter. Rogers started the quarter's scoring and then fed Thomas for a goal. Senior attackman Pat Nowak (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) found the back of the net with 7:16 left and junior attackman Cade Kelleher (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) scored just 14 seconds later after taking a pass from freshman face-off specialist Zac Cooley (Webster, N.Y./Pittsford). Taylor recorded his third goal of the half only 13 seconds later after accepting a feed from Jenkins in an extra-man situation.

Rockhurst tallied the next two goals. Michael Beckham got the Hawks on the scoreboard at the 5:02 after scooping up the loose ball after his initial shot was saved. He found the back of the net again 81 seconds later.

Senior midfielder Nick Kline (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) gave the Dolphins a 13-2 lead at halftime by finishing off a feed from freshman midfielder Mike Nanosky (Medina, Ohio/Medina) with 46 seconds left in the quarter.

The Hawks scored three of the first four goals of the third quarter to get within 14-5. Jake Martin scored unassisted with 13:41 left and then finished off a pass from Beckham 30 seconds later. After Kesselring pushed Le Moyne's lead back to 10 with 9:54 left off a pass from senior defensive midfielder Kyle DeAngelis (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool), Beckham tallied his third goal of the game 13 seconds later off a pass from Martin.

Le Moyne scored four times around a Rockhurst goal over the last 7:03 of the quarter for an 18-6 advantage. Kelleher scored off a pass from Jenkins and then junior defensive midfielder Ryan Desmond (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe) scored in transition off a feed from Thomas 18 seconds later. Jenkins dished out his fourth assist of the game as Kline scored with 5:31 remaining. Shea Radel made it 17-6 12 seconds later, but Taylor capped the quarter's scoring with 4:28 left after taking a pass from Rogers.

The Dolphins put the game away with five straight goals over the first 7:09 of the final quarter. Kelleher ignited the run off a pass from junior attackman/midfielder Alex O'Brien (Hanson, Mass./Boston College High) with 13:52 left and sophomore attackman Ryan Suddaby (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) followed with his first point 59 seconds later. Suddaby then assisted on a pair of goals by Jackson and a goal by Nowak over a span of 3:01.

Collin Fischer tallied his second goal of the season with 4:36 left and Chris Schveninger followed with his first with 2:40 to play.

Freshman midfielder Robert McCarthy (Olathe, Kan./Olathe East) ended the game's scoring with 28 seconds left off a pass from sophomore midfielder Greg White (Buffalo, N.Y./Nichols School).

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.), the reigning USILA Most Outstanding Goalkeeper, recorded six saves (against six goals allowed) over 45 minutes to earn the win between the pipes. Alex Pfeil took the loss after allowing nine goals over 18:56, while posting three saves.

Le Moyne (1-0), which had its highest scoring output since a 24-3 win at Franklin Pierce on April 24, 2004, returns to Ted Grant Field on Saturday against Walsh University at 1:00 p.m.
