MEN'S BASKETBALL DOWNS NEW HAVEN, 60-52, TO CLAIM FOURTH SEED IN NE-10 CHAMPIONSHIP

West Haven, Conn. – Sophomore guard Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College men's basketball team to a 60-52 win over the University of New Haven in the Northeast-10 Conference regular-season finale for both teams on Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium.

With the victory, the Dolphins finish the regular season with a 7-13 record in conference action and tie with American International College for fourth place in the NE-10 Southwest Division. By virtue of the conference's tie-breaking procedure, the Dolphins claim the fourth seed and will host Franklin Pierce University, the fifth seed in the Northeast Division, on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Sangster tallied nine of his game-high point total in the opening half, while adding four rebounds and two assists. Seniors Qwadere Lovell (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Mount Vernon) and Connor Mahoney (Hanover, Mass./BC High/Brooks School) and sophomore Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) each recorded nine points, while Lovell had a team-high seven rebounds and three assists and Hyland pulled down six rebounds.

New Haven, which played only six players, had three players score in double-digits. In his final collegiate game, Samir McDaniels recorded a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, while classmate Joshua Guddemi closed out his career with 16 points and six rebounds. Tommy Hunt was the third Charger in twin figures with 14 points, 11 of which came in the first half.

After Hunt hit a three-pointer with 16:57 left in the first half to give the Chargers a 7-4 lead, the Dolphins scored seven straight points. Sangster hit a three-pointer and a lay-up and then Lovell made a lay-up.

Following back-and-forth play over the next five minutes, New Haven recorded eight straight points over 3:06 to take its largest lead of the game. Hunt hit back-to-back three-pointers and then Guddemi converted a lay-up.

Le Moyne scored 10 of the last 15 points of the half to tie the score at halftime. Four Dolphins scored in the span, led by four points from Sangster.

The Dolphins took control of the game by scoring the first nine points of the second half and 18 of the first 23 points. Mahoney tallied seven of the points in the stretch, while junior forward Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) made two lay-ups.

New Haven answered with a 10-2 run to cut its deficit to 47-42 with 9:05 remaining in the game. Jayson Cathoute had a conventional three-point play to start the game and then McDaniels scored seven consecutive points.

Le Moyne pushed its lead back to double-digits with seven of the next eight points. Hyland and Sangster made shots in the paint and then Lovell drained a three-pointer from the right wing for a 54-43 lead with 5:41 left.

After the teams split the next eight points, New Haven closed out the game with five of the last seven points, all of which came from the foul line.

Le Moyne (10-16, 7-13 NE-10), which won three of its last four conference games to earn its conference tournament berth, fell to Franklin Pierce, 66-63, in the teams' regular-season meeting on January 30.
