Philadelphia, Pa. – Graduate student pitcher
Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) struck out 10 batters and younger brother
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a 5-0 win over the University of the Sciences in the second game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at The Krajewski Family Field at Father Judge High School's Ramp Athletic Field Complex. The Devils recorded a 1-0 win in the opener to earn a split of the doubleheader.
University of the Sciences scored the only run in the first game on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. First baseman Matt Miniconzi led off with a double down the right field line and then moved to third on a groundout. Following a strikeout, left fielder Vince Tomasetti singled to left field to plate Miniconzi.
The Dolphins advanced a runner to second base on three occasions, but could not plate the tying run.
Junior righty
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) struck out 11 of the 22 batters he faced, but was the tough-luck loser after yielding just one run and two hits. Senior catcher
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) broke up Pablo Matos' no-hit bid with a single through the left side with two outs in the top of the seventh. Matos recorded five strikeouts, the last of which came with West at second base, to earn the win.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need on a solo home run to left field by
Nick Place to open the second inning.
Le Moyne added four runs on five hits in the top of the fourth inning. Junior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) led off with a double to left field and came around to score on a one-out single up the middle by
Nick Place. Following a single to center by redshirt junior right fielder
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant), sophomore left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) tripled to left center to drive in Place and Martin and force a pitching change. Freshman third baseman
Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) greeted the new pitcher with a single to left to plate Pittman.
Zach Place improved to 2-0 on the season after allowing just two hits in his seven innings of work to go along with his 10 strikeouts. In addition to
Nick Place's three-hit performance, Martin recorded a pair of hits. C.J. Hertz took the loss for the Devils after giving up five runs on seven hits over three and one-third innings pitched, while striking out three.
The Dolphins (5-2) and the Devils will play another doubleheader on Sunday at the Ramp Complex starting at 12:00 p.m.
