BASEBALL SWEEPS UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES, 4-1, 2-1

Philadelphia, Pa. – Redshirt junior Ryan O'Kane (Memphis, N.Y./Bishop Ludden) and freshman Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) each tossed complete games to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of the University of the Sciences on Sunday afternoon at The Krajewski Family Field at Father Judge High School's Ramp Athletic Field Complex. The Dolphins won the opening game, 4-1, and claimed the nightcap, 2-1.

In the opener, the Dolphins scored three runs on five hits in the first inning. After junior center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) singled with two outs and stole second, junior catcher/third baseman Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) singled to drive in DiNorcia. Following a single by senior designated hitter/catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit), freshman first baseman/designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) singled to knock in Levanti with the eventual game-winning run. Sophomore left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) followed with a double to plate West from third.

The Dolphins added a run in the bottom of the third without needing a hit. DiNorcia drew a walk to open the frame, stole second and then moved to third on a groundout. West then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate DiNorcia.

University of the Sciences broke through in the fourth with one run on one hit. First baseman Pat Hiester was hit by a pitch to open the inning and then moved to second on a passed ball. After a walk and a single to load the bases, Hiester scored as catcher Ryan Scholey hit into a double play.

O'Kane earned his second win of the season after striking out three batters over seven innings, while yielding one run on five hits. Eric Stratoti took the loss after giving up four runs on five hits over six innings, while striking out two.

The Dolphins struck first in the nightcap with one run on one hit and one USciences error in the third inning. Senior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) was hit by a pitch to start the inning and freshman third baseman/shortstop Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) followed with a single to left field. After a double play advanced Wright to third, he scored as senior shortstop/second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) reached on an error by the third baseman.

USciences stayed alive in the game by scoring the tying run in the top of the seventh inning on two hits. Pinch-hitter Matt Miniconzi drew a walk to open the inning and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a single moved Miniconzi to third, he scored on a single by pinch-hitter Mark Gervasi.

The Dolphins walked off the Devils in the bottom of the seventh on one hit. Pittman singled to open the frame and then advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Wright and Gray were then intentionally walked to load the bases with zero outs. Sophomore right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) then pulled the ball to the second baseman and Pittman beat the throw home to score the winning run.

Walsh recorded five strikeouts over seven innings to earn his second win of the year, while allowing one run on three hits. West led the Dolphins offensively by going 3-for-3 at the plate. Chris Geraci suffered the loss after allowing one run on one hit and two walks without getting an out.

Le Moyne (7-2), which has won seven of its first nine games for the first time since the 1993 team started 12-0, returns to action on Saturday for a doubleheader at Shippensburg University at 12:00 p.m.
