SECOND-RANKED WOMEN’S LACROSSE RALLIES FOR 12-10 WIN OVER 13TH-RANKED MERCYHURST

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior all-America attacker Erica Geremia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/SUNY Cortland) scored the go-ahead goal as the second-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team rallied for a 12-10 season-opening victory over 13th-ranked Mercyhurst University on Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring just under four minutes into the contest as freshman midfielder Monica Sanna (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) found the back of the net off a pass from Geremia.

Mercyhurst evened the score at one apiece with 24:43 left in the half on an unassisted goal by Carly Zimmerman.

Le Moyne answered with the next two goals over two and one-half minutes. Senior all-America attacker Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) scored with 21:15 left and then freshman attacker Bryanna Fazio (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) tallied her first goal with 18:37 remaining.

Zimmerman trimmed Le Moyne's lead back to one with a free-position goal with 17:44 left, but Geremia pushed the lead back to two with 13:24 to go after taking a pass from Fazio.

After eight minutes of scoreless play, Mercyhurst scored twice in 27 seconds to even the score at four apiece. Emily Gebhardt scored off a rebound in an extra-player situation with 5:21 left and then Janelle Williams recorded her third goal of the campaign with 4:54 remaining.

The Dolphins answered with back-to-back goals to regain the two-goal advantage. Monnat fired in her second goal of the game at the 3:57 mark and then Geremia converted a free-position shot 1:20 later.

Mercyhurst scored twice in the last 71 seconds of the half to knot the score at six. After Kristina Roberti scooped up a loose ball on the defensive end, she raced up field before flipping a pass to Olivia Keirn, who recorded her second goal of the season with 1:11 left. Following a caused turnover and ground ball by Roberti with 33 seconds to go, Grace Lawson netted her sixth goal of the year with 13 seconds remaining.

The Dolphins registered the first two goals of the second half to take their fourth two-goal lead of the game. Geremia gave her team the lead with 22:28 left and then she fed Fazio for her second goal 62 seconds later.

Following almost eight minutes of scoreless play, the Lakers pulled within one with 13:34 left as Kyla Keefe scored her first goal of the season off a pass from Gebhardt, who had scooped up an errant shot behind the net.

Fazio got the goal back 1:07 later with an unassisted tally.

Mercyhurst scored three times in 2:14 to take its only lead of the game. Kristin Anderson started the run with a free-position goal with 11:43 remaining. Only 18 seconds later, Gebhardt tied the score with an unassisted marker, which forced a Le Moyne timeout. Zimmerman put the Lakers in front with 9:29 to play after finishing off a pass from Gebhardt.

The Dolphins tallied the last three goals of the game to claim the victory. Fazio knotted the score at 10 apiece with 6:34 remaining after taking a feed from Monnat. With Fazio getting fouled on the shot, the Dolphins were awarded the ball at midfield. The Dolphins took advantage of the free possession as Geremia found the back of the net only 31 seconds later after accepting a pass from Monnat. Fazio completed the game's scoring by curling around the left side of the cage in an extra-player situation with 3:33 left.

Junior goalkeeper Christina Humbert (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) registered four saves (against nine goals) in 59:56 between the pipes to earn her eighth career victory. Gabby Gravino registered nine saves for the Lakers in the loss. The Dolphins recorded a 27-17 advantage in shots and posted a 13-9 edge in draw controls.

Le Moyne (1-0), which rallied to beat the Lakers in overtime in Erie to open the season last year, returns to action on Saturday at fifth-ranked LIU Post at 12:00 p.m.
