SECOND-RANKED WOMEN’S LACROSSE HOLDS OFF FIFTH-RANKED LIU POST, 7-5

Brookville, N.Y. – Senior all-America attacker Erica Geremia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/SUNY Cortland) scored three goals to lead the second-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team to a 7-5 win over fifth-ranked LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at Bethpage Stadium.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the opening 17:08 of the game. Senior all-America attacker Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) started the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 26:28 mark. Less than two minutes later, she fed junior midfielder Molly McGuane (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) for her first goal of the season. After 11 minutes of scoreless play, Geremia gave the Dolphins a 3-0 lead off a free-position shot to force a timeout by the Pioneers with 13:49 remaining in the half. Just 57 seconds later, freshman attacker Bryanna Fazio (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown) capped the opening run with an unassisted goal.

Cara Douglas got the Pioneers on the scoreboard by finishing off a pass from Emily Delaney with 8:44 left to make the score 4-1, which ended up being the halftime score.

Delaney found Jessica Marsh for a goal 1:47 into the second half to pull the Pioneers within 4-2.

The Dolphins answered with consecutive goals to take their second four-goal lead of the game. Monnat found the back of the net for the fourth time this season with 27:22 left and then Geremia tallied her sixth goal of the campaign 1:58 later after taking a pass from Fazio.

After almost eight minutes of scoreless action, the Pioneers scored twice in 54 seconds to trim their deficit in half. Delaney scored her fourth goal of the year at the 17:29 mark and then Connor Bird scored after taking a feed from Stefani Vagelatos.

Geremia put the Dolphins back up by three with her third tally of the game in an extra-player situation with 14:28 to play.

Ryan McKinney ended the game's scoring with an unassisted goal with 13:13 left.

LIU Post took two shots over the final 7:15, but the first was high and the second was saved by senior goalkeeper Ryan Cortese (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore).

Cortese finished the game with five saves, including four in the first half, to earn the win in her first career start between the pipes. Olivia Kirk registered seven saves, five of which came in the first half, in the loss for the Pioneers. The Dolphins recorded a 10-3 advantage in draw controls and posted a 17-12 edge in shots.

Le Moyne (2-0), which defeated LIU Post, 9-6, in Syracuse last March, returns home to face 11th-ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
