Norristown, Pa. – Second baseman Alec Craig drove in four runs, including a pair to break an eighth-inning tie, to lead Chestnut Hill College to a 9-6 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Thursday afternoon at Latshaw-McCarthy Field.
Le Moyne opened the game's scoring with one run in the first inning without needing a hit. Redshirt junior right fielder
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) drew a walk to open the game and then stole second base. After an out and a hit batsman, Martin stole third on a strikeout and raced home on a throwing error by the catcher.
The Griffins answered back in the bottom of the inning with one run on two hits. Craig led off with a triple to right field and came in to score on a one-out single through the left side by left fielder Brendan Looby.
The Dolphins used four hits to score two runs in the second inning. Sophomore left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) singled through the right side with one out and advanced to third on a double down the left field line by senior first baseman
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool). Senior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) followed with a double to right field to drive in Pittman and Wright.
Chestnut Hill took its first lead in the bottom of the second with four runs on one hit and two Le Moyne errors. Designated hitter Matthew Owens singled down the left field line to start the frame, third baseman Zach Szumigala walked on four pitches and then shortstop Jonathan Baturgil was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Owens then scored as Craig reached on a fielder's choice in which Baturgil was retired at second. As Craig stole second base, the catcher's throw was errant, which allowed Szumigala to score to go-ahead run. Following a pair of walks to load the bases again, Craig scored from third as Looby reached on a fielding error by the first baseman. First baseman Patrick Campion then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in center fielder Brandon DiBona, who drew the first of the back-to-back walks.
The Griffins added one run in the third on two hits. Owens led off with a single to center and advanced to second two batters later on a groundout. Craig followed with a single to left center to plate Owens.
Le Moyne trimmed its deficit to 6-5 in the fourth with two runs on two hits and a Chestnut Hill error. Martin walked to open the inning and took third on a double to center by senior second baseman
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker). Junior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) followed with a single to right to knock in Martin, while Charbonneau scored on a fielding error by the right fielder.
The Dolphins evened the score at six apiece in the sixth without getting a hit. DiNorcia drew a walk with one out and then stole second. After advancing to third on a pop, DiNorcia scored on a wild pitch.
After being held off the scoreboard for four innings, Chestnut Hill scored three times in the bottom of the eighth. Owens led off with a double to center and Szumigala followed with a seven-pitch walk. Following a sacrifice bunt that moved each runner up a base, Craig singled to the second baseman to drive in Owens and Szumigala. After DiBona worked a walk, pinch-hitter Demetrius Isaac lined out to the shortstop for the second out of the inning, but the shortstop's throw on a double-play attempt was off its mark, which allowed Craig to score from second.
Sophomore southpaw
Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) suffered the loss out of the bullpen after yielding three runs (two earned) on two hits in two innings of work. Charbonneau, Pittman and Swetman each accounted for two of Le Moyne's nine hits. Dylan Borawski earned the win out of the bullpen after tossing two scoreless innings, while striking out two batters. Justin Harnett retired all three batters he faced, including one via strikes, to record his first save of the season. Craig and Owens each tallied three of Chestnut Hill's eight hits.
Le Moyne (9-6), which falls to 2-4 through six games of its 11-game, nine-day road trip, returns to action on Friday at #4/6 Millersville University at 2:30 p.m.
