SOFTBALL CLOSES OUT PLAY AT WEST VIRGINIA WESLEYAN INVITATIONAL WITH 3-1 WIN OVER GANNON

Salem, Va. – Junior shortstop Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) recorded two hits and scored a run to lead the Le Moyne College softball team to a 3-1 win over Gannon University on the final day of the West Virginia Wesleyan Invitational on Sunday at the Moyer Complex.

After three scoreless innings to start the game, the Dolphins scored three times on two hits and two Gannon errors in the fourth. Case led off with a single to left field, moved to second on a single through the left side by senior left fielder Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and took third as junior center fielder Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) reached on an error by the pitcher to load the bases. Junior third baseman Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) reached on a fielder's choice by the third base to knock in Case, while Reynolds came around to score as the ball got away from the catcher. Senior right fielder Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) then grounded out to the second baseman to drive in Riley.

Gannon cut its deficit to two in the sixth inning on two hits and two Le Moyne errors, but left the tying run stranded at second. Right fielder Kellyn Perich led off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a throwing error by the left fielder. After a sacrifice bunt, Perich scored from third on a single to left field by center fielder Jackie Martinez. Second baseman Jen Moran then reached on an error by the third baseman, but the next two batters were retired to end the rally.

Freshman Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) earned her fourth straight victory in the circle after striking out nine batters, while yielding one run on just three hits. Olivia Gumbita took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits over six innings, while striking out six.

Le Moyne (12-5), which has won 12 of its first 17 games for the first time since the 2009 squad that advanced to the NCAA Championships did so, opens Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday at American International College at 3:00 p.m.
