BASEBALL EXPLODES FOR 11 RUNS IN NIGHTCAP TO EARN SPLIT AT ADELPHI, 1-3, 11-1

Garden City, N.Y. – Junior catcher Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) had three hits and two RBI to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to an 11-1 win over Adelphi University on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at Bonomo Field. The Panthers won the opening game of the day, 3-1.

The Dolphins opened the scoring in the nightcap with one run on one hit and one Adelphi error in the first inning. Levanti singled to the shortstop with two outs and came around to score as freshman designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) reached on a dropped fly ball by the right fielder.

Adelphi evened the score at one apiece in the bottom of the third with one hit and two Le Moyne errors. Right fielder Brandon Morse reached on an error by the shortstop with one out and moved to third on a single to center by center fielder Michael Cattani. As Cattani advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher after stealing second, Morse scored the tying run.

Le Moyne regained the lead in the sixth with four runs on four hits and one Adelphi error. The Dolphins loaded the bases as Place walked, senior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) singled through the left side and redshirt junior left fielder Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) was hit by a pitch. After an out, Place scored as junior center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on an error by the second baseman. Senior shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) and sophomore right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) followed with infield singles to drive in Wright and Martin. Two batters later, Levanti singled to the shortstop to plate Swetman.

The Dolphins blew the game open with six runs on six hits and one Adelphi error in the eighth inning. DiNorcia led off with a single to center, stole second and then moved to third as Swetman reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Following a pitching change, Cox singled through the left side to knock in DiNorcia. After a walk by senior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker), Levanti singled through the left side to drive in Swetman. Place followed with a single to right center to plate Charbonneau and Levanti and force another pitching change. After a Wright single up the middle and an out, freshman third baseman Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) doubled to left center to drive in Place and Wright.

Freshman righty Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) earned his conference-leading fourth win of the season after yielding just one unearned run and three hits over seven innings, while striking out three. DiNorcia joined Levanti in posting three hits, while Cox, Wright and Swetman each had two of Le Moyne's 14 hits. Matthew O'Connor took the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) and four hits over five-plus innings, while striking out five.

In the opener, Adelphi struck first, scoring one run on three hits in the second inning. First baseman Robert Vani led off with a single up the middle, took second on a single to left by third baseman Brett Malm and moved to third on a groundout. Designated hitter Alex Zykoff then singled to left field to drive in Vani.

The Dolphins answered back in the next half inning with two hits to knot the score at one apiece. Sophomore left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) led off with a single to second base and moved to second on a one-out bunt single by Swetman. After Cox walked to load the bases, Charbonneau lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Pittman.

Adelphi took advantage of a Le Moyne error to score the winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Cattani singled up the middle to open the frame and then took second on a sacrifice bunt. After a single by Vani and foul out that advanced each runner a base, Cattani and Vani scored as the left fielder dropped a fly ball on the warning track.

Graduate student righty Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) was the tough-luck loser after yielding three runs (one earned) and eight hits over eight innings, while striking out five. Michael Tarpey earned the win out of the bullpen after retiring all three batters he faced. Steven Kuhn picked up a save after tossing the ninth inning.
