POWERS AND PLACE PITCH BASEBALL TO SWEEP OF ASSUMPTION, 7-2, 6-0

Syracuse, N.Y. – Junior righty Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) and graduate student righty Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) each went eight innings to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of Assumption College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader at Dick Rockwell Field. The Dolphins won the opening game, 7-2, and registered a 6-0 win in the nightcap.

The Dolphins got the afternoon's scoring started with one run on three hits in the first inning. After senior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled to right center with one out, junior third baseman/catcher Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) doubled to right field, but Charbonneau was thrown out at the plate. Freshman designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) followed with a single to center to drive in Levanti.

Senior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) extended the lead to 2-0 with a two-out, solo home run to right center.

Assumption took advantage of a Le Moyne error in the top of the fifth to get on the scoreboard. Second baseman Colin Clancy led off with a single through the right side and moved to second as left fielder Trevor McQuade reached on a fielding error by the shortstop. After a pop out and a single to the left side by center fielder Michael Panza to load the bases, Clancy scored on a groundout.

The Dolphins scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on three hits to take a 4-1 lead. Junior center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) led off with a double to left field and took third on a wild pitch. After an out, senior shortstop Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) singled through the right side to knock in DiNorcia. Following a single and a groundout, Swetman stole home as Charbonneau stole second.

The Dolphins used the longball in the seventh and eighth innings to extend their lead to 7-1. After a two-out walk by sophomore right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingstown, R.I./North Kingstown) in the seventh, Charbonneau blasted his first career home run to left field in his 413th career at-bat. With one out in the eighth, Wright drilled his 10th career home run to left center.

The Greyhounds completed the game's scoring with one run in the ninth inning. First baseman Jake Byrne drew a walk to start the frame and took second on a single through the right side by shortstop Hunter Tralli. After a groundout, Byrne scored on a groundout by McQuade.

Powers struck out a career-high 14 batters over eight innings to earn his second win of the season, while yielding just an unearned run and five hits. He registered a pair of strikeouts in five of his eight innings on the mound. Steve Flynn took the loss for the Greyhounds after allowing four runs and seven hits over five innings, while striking out three.

The Dolphins scored the only run they would need in the nightcap in the bottom of the first. Cox walked to start the frame, stole second and then scored on a throwing error by the shortstop as Charbonneau reached on a single to the shortstop.

Le Moyne blew the game open with five runs on four hits in the sixth inning. After Cox walked and Charbonneau reached on a fielder's choice, Levanti singled up the middle to drive in Cox, while Charbonneau raced around to score and Levanti moved to third after the center fielder bobbled the ball after it hit off second base. Nick Place followed with a single through the right side to plate Levanti. Wright then lined the ball over the center fielder's head for a triple to plate Nick Place. Sophomore left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) then pulled the ball to the second baseman to knock in Wright with the final run of the game.

Zach Place earned his third victory on the mound after striking out nine batters over eight scoreless innings, while allowing just six hits and one hit batsman. Tom Horstkotte took the loss for Assumption after giving up six runs and seven hits over five and two-thirds innings.

Le Moyne (16-9, 4-1 NE-10) continues its homestand on Tuesday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m.
