Manchester, N.H. - Junior righty
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) struck out 14 over eight innings and
graduate student righty Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) struck out nine over seven innings to lead the Le Moyne College baseball team to a sweep of Saint Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Park. The Dolphins won the opening game, 4-0, and recorded a 5-2 win in the nightcap.
In the opening game, the Dolphins scored the only run they would need on one hit and a Saint Anselm error in the first inning. After junior third baseman
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop with two outs, freshman designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) singled to left center to drive in Levanti.
Le Moyne added three runs on two hits in the eighth inning. Senior second baseman
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) doubled to right center with one out and moved to third on a groundout. After
Nick Place walked and was replaced at first by redshirt junior pinch-runner
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant), who proceeded to steal second, senior first baseman
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) doubled to left field to knock in Charbonneau and Martin. Following walks by sophomore left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) and junior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) to load the bases, Wright scored on a wild pitch.
Powers registered 14 strikeouts for the second straight start to earn his third victory of the season, while yielding just four hits. As he did when he set his career high with 14 strikeouts last Saturday, Powers recorded a pair of strikeouts in five of his eight innings on the mound. Charbonneau, Wright and senior catcher
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) each recorded two of Le Moyne's 10 hits. Joseph Levasseur suffered his third loss of the season after allowing four runs (three earned) and nine hits over seven and two-thirds innings, while striking out three.
The Dolphins started the scoring in the nightcap with two runs on two hits and a Saint Anselm error in the second inning. Pittman doubled to right center with one out and then came around to score as Martin reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. Senior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) followed with a single through the right side to drive in Martin.
Le Moyne added one run without getting a hit in the third inning. Levanti walked on four pitches with one out and advanced all the way to third on a groundout. Wright then reached on a throwing error by the shortstop, which allowed Levanti to score.
The Dolphins tacked on two runs on two hits in the fourth inning. DiNorcia walked with one out and then stole second. After Charbonneau singled to left field, Levanti lifted a sacrifice fly to center to knock in DiNorcia.
Nick Place then singled to right field to plate Charbonneau from second.
Saint Anselm got on the scoreboard for the first time in the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Shaine Carpenter led off with a double to left center, took third on a groundout and then scored on a sacrifice fly to left by right fielder Jon McQuarrie.
The Hawks cut the final margin to 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth with one run on two hits. Pinch-hitter Max Wadington singled to right field with two outs, took second on defensive indifference and then scored on a single to left field by left fielder Connor Parent.
Zach Place struck out nine en route to picking up his fourth win of the season, while yielding one run and five hits. Swetman was the only Dolphin to post two hits in the contest. Autrey Gates took the loss after giving up five runs (two earned) and five hits over three and two-thirds innings, while striking out two.
