Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. – Designated player Surina Sandhu drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Pace University a 4-3 win over the Le Moyne College softball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Pace Field.
The Setters got on the scoreboard first with one run on two hits in the bottom of the second inning. Third baseman Victoria Quinones led off with a single up the middle and then took second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, shortstop Ashley Lew singled up the middle to drive in Quinones.
Le Moyne evened the score in the top of the third. Sophomore second baseman
Tess Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) drew walk to open the frame and raced around to score on a one-out double to left center by junior shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon).
Pace regained the lead in the fourth with two runs on one hit and one Le Moyne error. First baseman Annie Carberry reached on an error by the second baseman to start the inning and moved to second as Quinones was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, pinch-hitter Lindsey Ah Soon lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to drive in Carberry. Lew followed with a single through the right side to drive in Quinones from third.
The Dolphins cut their deficit in half in the sixth as junior catcher
Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) blasted a two-out, solo home run to left field.
Le Moyne knotted the score at three apiece in the seventh with a run on two hits and one Pace error. Case reached on a fielding error by the shortstop with one out and moved to second on a single to left field by senior left fielder
Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield). Junior third baseman
Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) followed with a single up the middle to knock in Case.
The Setters walked off the Dolphins for the second day in a row with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Lew and center fielder Larissa Labs opened the frame with back-to-back bunt singles. After an out, Sandhu drove in Lew from third with a ground ball.
Sophomore pitcher
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) took the loss after giving up one run and two hits over three innings in relief work. Caitlin McCann earned the win out of the bullpen after tossing the final one and one-third innings, while allowing an unearned run and two hits.
Le Moyne (15-11, 3-5 NE-10, 2-4 SW), which has dropped eight of 10 games at Pace since April 2014, returns home to face The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. The games are the 17th and 18th contests of the year in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions and are worth one-half point. The Dolphins and Golden Knights are currently tied 6-6 lead through the first 12 sports.
