BASEBALL HOLDS ON FOR 8-7 WIN OVER SHIPPENSBURG

Shippensburg, Pa. – Senior shortstop/pitcher Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) had three hits and earned the save as the Le Moyne College baseball team held on for an 8-7 win over Shippensburg University on Sunday afternoon at Fairchild Field.

The Dolphins opened the game's scoring with one run on two hits in the first inning. Junior center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) singled with two outs, stole second and came around to score on a single by junior third baseman Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker).

Shippensburg took the lead in the bottom of the second with two runs on just one hit. Left fielder Dalton Hoiles drew a walk to open the inning and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After third baseman Ryan McMillen was hit by a pitch and a fly out, second baseman Nick Spangler doubled to drive in Hoiles and McMillen.

Le Moyne regained the lead with two runs on one hit in the top of the third. Senior second baseman Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) was hit by a pitch with one out and then stole second. Following a walk by DiNorcia and a groundout to advance the runners, senior catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) singled to knock in DiNorcia and Charbonneau.

The Raiders evened the score at three apiece in the bottom of the frame with a pair of hits. Shortstop Mike Marcinko led off with a double down the left field line and then moved to third on a single to the shortstop by right fielder Grant Hoover. Center fielder Austin Allison then lifted a sacrifice fly to the second baseman to score Marcinko.

Following three scoreless innings, the Dolphins regained the lead with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Senior first baseman Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) broke the tie with a one-out solo home run to left field. Swetman followed with a single to center, stole second and then moved to third on a groundout. Charbonneau then singled to center to drive in Swetman.

The Dolphins added three insurance runs in the eighth on three hits. With one out, Levanti singled to left field and then West drew a walk. Freshman designated hitter Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) followed with a double to right center to knock in Levanti and West and force a pitching change. After a strikeout, Wright doubled to center to drive in Place.

Shippensburg rallied for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the ninth, but left the tying run stranded at third and the winning run at second base. Marcinko and Hoover opened the frame with singles to left and then Allison drew a walk to load the bases. Hoiles then doubled to left field to clear the bases and force a pitching change. Catcher Jack Goertzen greeted Swetman with a double to right center to knock in Hoiles and make it a one-run game. After McMillen walked, Swetman recorded a pair of strikeouts and then induced a pop out to end the game.

Freshman righty Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) improved to 3-0 on the season after recording two strikeouts over seven and one-third innings, while yielding three runs on six hits. Swetman finished with two strikeouts in one inning of work to earn his first career save. Levanti and Wright each added a pair of hits to join Swetman with multiple hits. Gabe Mosser took the loss out of the bullpen for the Raiders after allowing two runs on three hits in two innings.

Le Moyne (8-4) returns to the diamond on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Dowling College at 1:00 p.m.
