BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER WITH DOWLING, 2-5, 2-0

Shirley, N.Y. – Freshman righty Alex Dhionis (Groton, Mass./Noble and Grenough) and senior shortstop/pitcher Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) combined to throw a one-hit shutout as the Le Moyne College baseball team recorded a 2-0 win over Dowling College in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Golden Lions Field. Dowling claimed the opening game, 5-2.

The Dolphins scored the only run they would need in the nightcap in the third inning on two hits. Redshirt junior right fielder Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) led off with a single to left center, moved to second on a balk with one out and took third on a passed ball. Junior center fielder Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) followed with a single through the right side to plate Martin.

Le Moyne added an insurance run in the fifth inning on two hits and a Dowling error. Martin led off with a single to center and then advanced to third on a failed pickoff attempt by the pitcher. After a Dowling pitching change and a strikeout, junior third baseman/catcher Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to drive in Martin.

Dhionis recorded six strikeouts over five innings, while allowing just one hit, to earn the win in his first career start. Swetman earned his second save in three days by striking out four batters over two hitless innings. Martin, senior designated hitter/catcher Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) and sophomore left fielder JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) each recorded two of Le Moyne's nine hits. John Parisi took the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits over four-plus innings, while striking out one.

In the opening game, Dowling broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with one run on one hit and two Le Moyne errors. First baseman Robert Morse doubled down the left field line to open the inning and moved to third as center fielder Chris Appell reached on a throwing error by the catcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Morse then scored as left fielder Jonathan Tenaglia reached on a fielding error by the pitcher on a sacrifice bunt attempt.

The Dolphins evened the score at one apiece in the top of the sixth with one run on one hit. Sophomore right fielder Brian Cox (North Kingston, R.I./North Kingston) drew a walk on seven pitches to open the inning and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a strikeout, Levanti singled to center to drive in Cox.

The Golden Lions regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth with four runs on three hits. After second baseman Rob Costanzo walked with one out, designated hitter Vinny Orlando tripled to right center to plate Costanzo with the go-ahead run. Shortstop Tyler Piccolo then singled through the left side to drive in Orlando. Following a walk by right fielder R.J. Going and a Le Moyne pitching change, Morse doubled to right center to knock in Piccolo. Appell then flied out to center to score Going.

Le Moyne brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but could only score one run. Pittman drew a walk on four pitches to open the frame and he advanced to third on a one-out double to left field by third baseman Josiah Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle). After Swetman worked a seven-pitch walk to load the bases and a pitching change, Cox lifted a sacrifice fly to left center to drive in Pittman. After falling behind 3-0 to the next batter, reliever Billy Goncalves induced a weak pop out to end the game.

Freshman Matt Acomb (Livonia, N.Y./Livonia) took the loss out of the bullpen after yielding four runs on two hits in one-third of an inning. Dennis Buckstein earned the victory after striking out seven over six innings, while allowing one run on two hits. Goncalves earned the save after retiring both batters he faced.

Le Moyne (9-5), which has split three of its six doubleheaders, returns to action on Thursday at Chestnut Hill College at 3:00 p.m.
