Syracuse, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College softball team recorded a pair of one-run victories to sweep Stonehill College in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The Dolphins held on for a 5-4 win in the opener and then registered a 2-1 walk-off victory in the nightcap.
The Skyhawks started the day's scoring with two runs on two hits and one Le Moyne error in the top of the second inning of the opening game. First baseman Erin Brayden drew a walk to open the frame and then center fielder Lauren Esposito reached on a bunt single in front of the plate. Following a pair of groundouts in which Brayden and Esposito were retired at third, left fielder Michelle Carbone reached on a fielding error by the shortstop to load the bases. Second baseman Alison Sumski then singled down the left field line to plate catcher Megan Staudle. Pitcher Megan Ruonavaara followed by drawing a walk to force in right fielder Lianna Jordan.
Le Moyne answered in the bottom of the third with four runs on five hits to take the lead. Sophomore second baseman
Tess Andrews (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) led off with a single to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After a single to left field by senior left fielder
Allison Reynolds (Penfield, N.Y./Penfield) and a walk by junior shortstop
Courtney Case (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) to load the bases, senior right fielder
Kirsten Trotta (Wilmington, Del./Alexis I. Dupont) singled to center to knock in Andrews. Junior third baseman
Kelly Mascari (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill/Buffalo) then singled up the middle to plate Reynolds and Case. Junior center fielder
Sabrina Riley (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) followed with a single to the left side of the infield to drive in Trotta for a 4-2 lead.
The Dolphins tacked on one run in the bottom of the fourth on three hits. Andrews opened the inning with a single to right field and took second on a one-out single to right by Reynolds. After a fly out, Trotta singled down the right field line to drive in Andrews.
The Skyhawks got the run back in the top of the fifth on three hits. Staudle and Jordan opened the frame with singles to right center and through the left side, respectively. After a lineout, Sumski singled to right field to knock in Staudle.
Stonehill scored once in the seventh, but left the tying run stranded at third. Carbone led off with a double to left center and then Sumski drew a walk. After a sacrifice bunt, Oleksak singled to right field to drive in Carbone. Sumski was left at third base as the next two batters were retired.
Senior
Toni Secreti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Westhill/Herkimer C.C.) earned her 10th win of the year after striking out two over five and two-thirds innings. Sophomore
Alexis Eastman (Endicott, N.Y./Union-Endicott) closed out the victory by tossing the final one and one-third inning to earn her third save, while striking out two. Trotta, Andrews and Reynolds each had two of Le Moyne's nine hits. Ruonavaara took the loss after giving up five runs on nine hits over six innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with one run on one hit in the first inning. Case led off with a double to the wall in left field and moved to third two batters later on a groundout. Riley then lifted a sacrifice fly into foul territory in right field to drive in Case.
The Skyhawks evened the score at one apiece in the top of the sixth inning on two hits. Esposito and Staudle opened the inning with singles to the left side. After an error to load the bases and a strikeout, Sumski flied out to left field to knock in Esposito.
After Stonehill advanced a runner into scoring position in the top of the seventh without being able to score, the Dolphins plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Junior catcher
Emily Bagley (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) walked to open the frame and was replaced at first by freshman pinch-runner
Lauren Floyd (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse). After senior first baseman
Cara Cawley (Endwell, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) was hit by a pitch and Reynolds dropped a bunt single between the circle and first base to load the bases, Case laced a single up the middle to drive in Floyd with the winning run.
Eastman registered her 11th win of the season, the second-highest total in the conference, after striking out two over seven innings, while yielding six hits. Case registered three of Le Moyne's six hits in the contest. Sarah Ropiak took the loss after allowing two runs on six hits over six-plus innings, while striking out six.
Le Moyne (21-12, 9-6 NE-10), which improved to 6-2 at home, continues its homestand on Saturday with a Southwest Division doubleheader against Southern Connecticut State University at 12:00 p.m.
