Syracuse, N.Y. – Center fielder John Kukura registered five hits and drove in four runs to lead Pace University to a sweep of the Le Moyne College baseball team on Sunday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division doubleheader at Dick Rockwell Field. The Setters won the opening game, 10-3, and held on for a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
Le Moyne opened the day's scoring with a run on three hits in the bottom of the second inning in the first game. Senior third baseman/first baseman
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) led off with a single to left field, advanced to second on a groundout and then took third on a single down the third baseline by senior designated hitter/catcher
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit). Senior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) followed with a single to right field to drive in Wright.
Pace took the lead in the fourth inning with four runs on four hits. Left fielder Michael Gulino was hit by a pitch to open the inning. After an out due to batter's interference, first baseman Garrett De Lotto blasted a two-run home run to right field. Following an out, third baseman Nick LoBello singled to left field, designated hitter/pitcher James Wynne walked and shortstop Brett Bittiger singled to center to load the bases. Kukura followed with a single up the middle to drive in LoBello and Wynne.
The Setters added to their lead in the fifth with one run on two hits. Gulino led off with a single up the middle, advanced to third on a one-out single to right by De Lotto and then scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by catcher Frank Mayo.
The Dolphins used one hit and one Pace error to score twice in the bottom of the fifth. Redshirt junior right fielder
Mark Martin (Sauquoit, N.Y./Sauquoit Valley/Bryant) led off by drawing a walk and then took second as junior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on a fielding error by the first baseman. After Martin was retired after advancing too far off third base as senior second baseman
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) reached on a fielder's choice, junior catcher/third baseman
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker/Northeastern) walked on four pitches to load the bases. Freshman first baseman/designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) then doubled to left center to drive in DiNorcia and Charbonneau.
After the Dolphins left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, the Setters blew the game open with five runs on seven hits in the seventh inning. Gulino walked with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch, took third groundout and then scored on a double down the right field line by De Lotto. After a single by Mayo and a Le Moyne pitching change, LoBello singled home De Lotto. Wynne and Kukura followed with run-scoring singles to make the score 10-3.
Graduate student righty
Zach Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda/Susquehanna) suffered his fourth loss of the season after allowing five runs on seven hits over five innings. Wright, West and Swetman each recorded two of Le Moyne's nine hits. Tim Deegan earned his first win of the year for the Setters after yielding three runs (two earned) on seven hits over five and one-third innings. Michael Forgione earned his second save of the season after striking out three over three and two-thirds innings.
In the nightcap, the Dolphins loaded the bases without any outs in the first inning, but were only able to score one run. DiNorcia led off the inning with a double to left center and then Charbonneau and Levanti were hit by pitches to load the bases.
Nick Place followed with a sacrifice fly to center to drive in DiNorcia.
Pace took the lead for the first time in the top of the second with two runs on three hits. After De Lotto singled and Mayo doubled down the left field line with one out, LoBello singled down the right field line to plate De Lotto and Mayo.
The Dolphins regained the lead in the bottom of the third with two runs on three hits. Levanti was hit by a pitch with one out and came around to score on a double to center by
Nick Place. After Wright singled through the left side and a fly out, West singled through the right side to drive in
Nick Place.
The Setters evened the score at three apiece in the fourth with one hit and one Le Moyne error. Cory Capaldi drew a walk to open the frame, took second on a throwing error by the pitcher and then came around to score on a single to center by Mayo.
Pace took the lead back in the top of the fifth with one run on two hits. Coffey opened the inning with a double down the left field line, took third on a groundout and then scored on a single to right by Kukura.
The Setters added an insurance run, which turned out to be needed, in the seventh. LoBello led off with a single down the right field line, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a groundout and then scored on a wild pitch.
Le Moyne cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the eighth, but left the bases loaded after loading them with only one out. Wright started off the inning with a double to right field and sophomore left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) followed by drawing a walk. Wright then scored on a throwing error by the catcher as West reached on a fielder's choice. After Wynne took over on the mound following a walk by Martin to load the bases, he induced a groundout and a fly out to get out of the jam.
Freshman righty
Sam Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings, while striking out two. Mike Sweeney earned the win out of the bullpen for the Setters are yielding one run over four innings. Wynne earned his first save of the season after retiring all five batters he faced.
Le Moyne (20-11, 8-3 NE-10, 3-3 SW), which had its seven-game win streak snapped with the game one loss, continues its homestand on Tuesday against The College of Saint Rose at 3:00 p.m.
