Syracuse, N.Y. – Nick Cioffi struck out 11 batters and catcher Joe DeLuca drove in four runs to lead The College of Saint Rose to an 11-3 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Tuesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action on Tuesday afternoon at Dick Rockwell Field.
Saint Rose scored the first eight runs of the game over five innings. With two outs in the first inning, the Golden Knights scored once on one hit. Shortstop Tyler Ungerland was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a walk and then scored on a single to center by DeLuca.
The Golden Knights added three runs on three hits in the second inning. Right fielder Sean Maki led off with a double to right center, but was eventually retired between third and home as center fielder Derek Reed reached on a fielder's choice. After taking third on a wild pitch, Reed scored on a single up the middle by left fielder Nick Venier. Ungerland followed with a home run to left field for a 4-0 lead.
Saint Rose scored four times on three hits and one Le Moyne error in the fifth inning. Venier and Ungerland each walked to open the frame and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt. DeLuca then singled to center field to drive in Venier and Ungerland and force a Le Moyne pitching change. After an out and a single to center by second baseman Mike Flynn to load the bases, Maki singled to right center to knock in DeLuca. Designated hitter Alec Caprarella then scored as first baseman Chris Introcaso beat out a double-play opportunity.
Le Moyne broke through with two runs on three hits and one Saint Rose error in the seventh inning. After senior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) led off with a single through the right side and stole second base, he scored on a throwing error by the catcher as freshman right fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on a wild pitch on a strikeout. Following a pair of outs, junior third baseman
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) singled to center to drive in DiNorcia.
Saint Rose scored three times on two hits in the eighth to finish of its scoring output. Maki walked to start the inning, Introcaso to left field and then Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bases and force a pitching change. Maki then scored as Venier grounded out to the second baseman. After Ungerland was hit by a pitch to load the bases again, third baseman Alex Chandler singled up the middle to drive in Introcaso. DeLuca then grounded out to plate Reed with Saint Rose's final run.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the bottom of the eighth to deliver the final score. Senior first baseman/pitcher
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) led off with a double to the base of the wall in right center. After a single and a pop out, Swetman singled up the middle to drive in his classmate.

Ben Walsh (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill), making his first appearance since February 19, suffered his first loss of the year after giving up one run on two hits in the first inning. Swetman and Levanti each recorded two of Le Moyne's eight hits in the game. Cioffi struck out 11 over seven innings on the mound, while yielding two unearned run on five hits.
Le Moyne (20-12, 8-4 NE-10, 3-4 SW), which has dropped three straight games, continues its 11-game homestand on Saturday against American International College at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the first pitch, the seven members of the senior class will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
