Syracuse, N.Y. – Left fielder Tyler Geffert threw out the potential game-tying run at the plate as American International College held on for a 6-5 win over the Le Moyne College baseball team on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Dick Rockwell Field.
The Yellow Jackets opened the game's scoring in the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Second baseman Brendan Carter drew a walk on five pitches to start the game, stole second with one out and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. He then scored on a groundout by first baseman Chris Starcun.
Le Moyne took advantage of an AIC error to even the score in the second inning. Senior catcher
Trey West (Fairport, N.Y./McQuaid Jesuit) singled to right field with one out and then stole second base. After a walk and a groundout, West scored from third on a throwing error by the catcher as senior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) stole second.
American International regained the lead in the fourth on two hits and a Le Moyne error. Third baseman K.J. White singled to left field with two outs and then stole second base. Designated hitter Karl Kapinos followed with a single back to the pitcher to move White to third, while White then scored as the pitcher's throw to first was in the dirt.
After the Dolphins left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets scored twice in the top of the fifth with just one hit. Center fielder Josh Aviles walked on five pitches to start the frame, catcher Eugene Quirk was then hit by the first pitch he faced and then shortstop Eddie Ritch drew a walk on five pitches to load the bases. Geffert then slipped a single inside third base to drive in Aviles and Quirk.
Le Moyne got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth as junior center fielder
Donato DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) led off with his first home run of the season down the right field line.
The Yellow Jackets pushed their lead back to three in the sixth as Kapinos drilled a one-out home run to right field.
The Dolphins cut their deficit back to two in the seventh on one hit and one AIC error. Senior first baseman
Pat Wright (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) reached on a fielding error by the shortstop with one out and then took second on a wild pitch. West followed with a single to left center to drive in his classmate.
American International plated the eventual winning run in the eighth with one hit. Starcun tripled over the center fielder's head with one out and then scampered home on a passed ball.
In the ninth, the Dolphins scored twice on five hits, but had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate to end the game. Freshman designated hitter
Nick Place (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) led off with a single down the third base line. After a pair of outs, sophomore left fielder
JT Pittman (Ashland, Mass./Ashland/Bridgton Academy) singled to center to move Place to second, where he was replaced by sophomore pinch-runner
Timothy Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy). After Swetman singled to the left side to load the bases, freshman right fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) lined a single up the middle to drive in Corapi.
Donato DiNorcia then singled through the left side to knock in Pittman, but Swetman was unable to avoid the tag at the plate on Geffert's throw to end the game.
Junior righty
Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) suffered his third loss of the season after yielding six runs (four earned) on five hits and four walks over eight innings, while striking out eight. Both DiNorcia brothers, West and Pittman each registered two of Le Moyne's 13 hits in the game. Nick Kennedy earned the win for the Yellow Jackets after striking out seven over six innings, while allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits. Harrison Paige earned a three-inning save despite allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits over three innings out of the bullpen.
Le Moyne (20-13, 8-5 NE-10, 3-5 SW), which has dropped four games in a row for the first time this season, concludes its series with the Yellow Jackets on Sunday with a doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.
