TOP-RANKED ADELPHI USES SECOND-HALF RUNS TO EDGE SECOND-RANKED WOMEN’S LACROSSE, 10-7

Garden City, N.Y. – Jacqueline Jahelka recorded four points to lead top-ranked Adelphi University to a 10-7 win over the second-ranked Le Moyne College women's lacrosse team on Tuesday night in a battle of the last two undefeated teams in Division II.

Following almost 11 minutes of scoreless action to start the game, the Dolphins struck for the first goal. After junior defender Vicki Graveline (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) was awarded a free-position attempt, she fed the ball to freshman attacker Bryanna Fazio (Watertown, N.Y./General Brown), who slipped a shot into the back of the net with 19:06 left in the first half. The Dolphins doubled their lead nine and one-half minutes later as senior attacker Maggie Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) converted a free-position shot for her 24th goal of the year.

Adelphi countered with a pair of goals in 52 seconds to even the score at two apiece with 6:10 remaining in the half. Jahelka got the Panthers on the scoreboard with 7:10 left with her 53rd tally of the year. Following a yellow card on the Dolphins, Rachel O'Brien scored 38 seconds into the extra-player situation to tie the score with 6:10 to go.

After almost five minutes of scoreless play, Monnat scored off another free-position shot to give the Dolphins a 3-2 lead with 1:24 remaining in the half.

Adelphi tied the score for the second time 3:22 into the second half as Michele Scannell converted a free-position shot.

The Dolphins regained the lead just 59 seconds later as senior attacker Claire Monnat (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) eluded the goalkeeper for her 10th goal of the season after taking a pass in transition from Fazio.

The Panthers answered back with three straight goals to take their first lead of the game. Only 42 seconds after Le Moyne took the lead back, Scannell made another free-position shot with 24:57 left for her 20th goal of the campaign. Following a failed clear by the Dolphins, Kate Beier gave Adelphi the lead with 21:31 to go after collecting a feed from O'Brien. Rachel Aitkens put the Panthers up by two for the first time with an unassisted goal with 20:24 to play.

The Dolphins countered with back-to-back goals in a span of 25 seconds to even the score for the fourth time. Fazio pulled her team within one with 15:56 remaining by converting a free-position shot for her 36th goal of the season, the second-most by a freshman in the program's history. Sophomore midfielder Jacqueline Pardee (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) tied the score at six apiece with 15:31 remaining by finishing off a pass from Maggie Monnat.

Adelphi responded with three consecutive goals to take the lead for good. In transition following a Le Moyne turnover, Jahelka put the Panthers in front after collecting a feed from O'Brien with 12:41 to play. After Jen Graham broke up a 2-on-1 situation by the Dolphins off the ensuing draw, Emily Keesling netted her 28th goal of the season with 11:44 to go off a pass from Jahelka. Following five and one-half minutes of scoreless play, Keesling found the back of the net after taking a feed from Scannell.

The Dolphins were able to pull within 9-7 with just under three minutes left, but were unable to get any closer. After scooping up a ground ball near midfield and then drawing a foul, Maggie Monnat registered her third free-position goal of the game with 2:54 left to get the Dolphins within two. Le Moyne had two opportunities to get within one with under two minutes left, but the first shot, a free-position shot, went wide right and the second was saved.

O'Brien finished off the game's scoring with 50 seconds left by scoring into an open net from the left edge of the crease after taking a pass from Jahelka.

Senior goalkeeper Ryan Cortese (Brewerton, N.Y./Paul V. Moore) registered eight saves, including five in the first half, in her first career loss between the pipes. Taylor Hayes turned away five shots to earn her 13th win of the season. For the first time in her 81-game collegiate career, senior attacker Erica Geremia (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee/SUNY Cortland) failed to record at least one point.

Le Moyne (12-1, 9-1 NE-10), which has lost six straight games to the Panthers since a victory in the 2013 Northeast-10 Conference Championship game, returns to action on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University at 12:00 p.m.
