Syracuse, N.Y. – For the second time in 364 days, junior midfielder
Brian Rogers (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) ended an NCAA Championships game with an overtime goal as the second-ranked and top-seeded Le Moyne College men's lacrosse team registered an 8-7 overtime victory over seventh-ranked and fourth-seeded New York Institute of Technology in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins, who tied the program's record for wins in a season with 18, now hosts second-seeded Merrimack College in the NCAA semifinals for the second straight year. The Dolphins and Warriors will square off for the right to advance to the NCAA Championship game on Saturday, May 21 at 12:00 p.m. at Ted Grant Field.
The Dolphins, who were playing the Bears for the first time since NYIT defeated Le Moyne in the 2008 National Championship game, jumped out to a 6-0 lead through the first 25 minutes of the game. Just under five and one-half minutes into the contest, the Dolphins opened the scoring as senior midfielder
Nick Kline (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) finished off a feed from senior attackman
Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) for his 13th goal of the year. Only two minutes later, graduate student midfielder
Matt Taylor (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Cornell) tallied his 24th goal of the season. Following a turnover by NYIT, senior defensive midfielder
Kyle DeAngelis (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) scooped up the loose ball and two passes later the ball ended up in the stick of Jenkins, who flipped a pass in transition to senior attackman
Logan Thomas (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool/Onondaga C.C.) for his team-best 43rd goal of the campaign to force a timeout with 6:38 left in the quarter. The 43 goals are tied for the sixth-most in a season in the program's history. Freshman attackman
Jack Vajda (Clinton, N.J./Rutgers Prep) gave the Dolphins a 4-0 lead with 25 seconds left in the opening quarter after taking a pass in an extra-man situation from Jenkins. The assist was the 91st of Jenkins' career, which moved him into fourth place on the program's career assists chart.
Sophomore midfielder
Bailey Wilkinson (Black River, N.Y./Carthage) got the scoring started in the second quarter with an unassisted goal just 35 seconds into the period. Rogers gave the Dolphins a 6-0 advantage with 5:48 left after collecting a pass from Jenkins.
Will Kistinger got the Bears on the scoreboard with an unassisted tally with 4:08 remaining in the second quarter.
NYIT scored all five goals of the third quarter and the first goal of the fourth quarter to take a 7-6 lead. Sean Cleary ignited the run with his 33rd goal of the season just over one minute into the second half. He followed with another unassisted goal at the 9:09 mark to pull the Bears within 6-3. Following a Le Moyne holding penalty, Vincent Ferraro finished off a feed inside from Cleary with 6:17 to go. Mike Chimenti made it a one-goal game with his sixth tally of the season with 4:06 left in the third, while Cleary tied the score 76 seconds later with his 35th marker of the year to force a Le Moyne timeout.
The Dolphins had a chance to regain the lead at the end of the quarter, but NYIT goalkeeper Alex Seltzer turned away a shot by Thomas with four seconds left.
Just 57 seconds into the fourth quarter, Tom Hughes gave the Bears the lead with his 35th goal of the season after taking a pass from Matthew Chanenchuk.
Following 12 minutes of scoreless action, the longest such stretch of the game, the Dolphins took advantage of an NYIT turnover to tie the score. After Joe Morhardt intercepted a Le Moyne pass, his clearing pass was intercepted by Jenkins, who then fired a shot towards the open net. Seltzer recovered and knocked the shot away, but Taylor picked up the loose ball in front of the net and flipped it into the net to knot the score at seven with 2:00 remaining in the game. The goal snapped Le Moyne's scoreless drought of 33:48.
NYIT won the ensuing faceoff and following a pair of timeouts had a shot to win the game, but Kistinger's shot was snared out of the air by sophomore long-stick midfielder
Jake Mortier (North Chili, N.Y./Churchville-Chili). After Mortier cleared the ball, Thomas sent a shot left of the cage with five seconds left. The Dolphins called timeout with four seconds to go, but were unable to get a shot off.
NYIT won the opening faceoff in overtime and called timeout with 3:34 left. Out of the timeout, Cleary flipped a pass to the left edge of the crease to George Schultz, who sent a shot towards the top of the goal, but it was smothered by redshirt senior goalkeeper
Alex Krawec (Kirkville, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa/Onondaga C.C.).
The Dolphins cleared the ball down the left sideline and called timeout with 3:04 remaining. Following the timeout, Rogers made a move down the right alley and ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the goal with 2:13 left in overtime to give the Dolphins the victory.
Krawec, who allowed more goals (7) than he made saves (6) for the first time in his 37 games started over the last two seasons, improved to 18-0 between the pipes this season. The 18 victories tie Jared Corcoran '07 in 2006 and Jeff White '13 in 2013 for the most in a season in the program's history. Seltzer finished the game with 10 saves, including three in each of the third and fourth quarters.
