West Haven, Conn. – Senior second baseman
Brett Charbonneau (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Le Moyne College baseball team a 2-1 win over the University of New Haven on Friday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division action at Frank Vieira Field. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Syracuse five days ago, but was postponed due to inclement weather.
The Dolphins got on the scoreboard first with one run on two hits and a New Haven error in the first inning. With one out, Charbonneau and junior third baseman
Gabe Levanti (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) recorded back-to-back singles to center field. Charbonneau then scored on a throwing error by the second baseman as the Chargers failed to turn a double play.
New Haven evened the score at one apiece in the fourth with just one hit. Shortstop Nick Russo led off with a single to left field and then moved to third following back-to-back one-out walks to left fielder Robert Petrillo and third baseman Jack Zagaja. Catcher TJ Riccio then lifted a sacrifice fly into center to drive in Russo.
Le Moyne took advantage of two New Haven errors in the eighth inning to score the go-ahead run. Freshman right fielder
David DiNorcia (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to open the inning and then took second on a sacrifice bunt. After moving to third as senior shortstop
Dylan Swetman (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) reached on a fielding error by the first baseman, DiNorcia scored on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher by Charbonneau.
Sophomore southpaw
Cody Barnes (Norwich, N.Y./Norwich) earned his second win of the season out of the bullpen after striking out a pair of batters over two scoreless innings. Vincent Aprea suffered the loss after allowing the two unearned runs over eight innings, while yielding just the two hits in the first inning and striking out six.
Le Moyne (25-15, 13-7 NE-10, 8-7 SW) starts a three-game series with Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12:00 p.m. The Dolphins need to win two of the three games with the Owls to claim the final berth in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship or else the Owls will capture the final spot. With the three games left, the Dolphins can finish anywhere from first to fifth in the Southwest Division.
