Natalie Casson (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman) registered 25 kills to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a pair of wins on Friday evening at the Long Island Invitational at Queens College's FitzGerald Gymnasium. The Dolphins opened the season with a 3-1 victory over Bloomfield College and then defeated the host Knights, 3-2.
Le Moyne jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match against Bloomfield by recording a 25-11 win in the opening set. The Bears answered with a 25-18 victory in the second set to even the match at one apiece. The Dolphins regained the lead with a 25-20 win in the third set and then closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth set.
Casson, a Northeast-10 Conference All-Conference Second Team selection as a junior, opened her senior campaign with 12 kills against the Bears, while adding seven digs and three service aces. Sophomore right side
Jessica Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) hit .500 en route to landing a match-best 15 kills, while posting three blocks. Junior
Kendall Corcoran (Fort Salonga, N.Y./Kings Park) registered a double-double by directing the offense with 43 assists and added 12 digs defensively. Sophomore libero
Mikayla Porr (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) led Le Moyne's defensive effort with 13 digs, while classmate
Molly Gallagher (Schenectady, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) posted 10 digs.
Valerie Bermudez, Paola Noble and Kali Viles each recorded eight kills to lead the Bears in the loss. Bermudez recorded nine digs and three service aces, while Noble posted six digs and a pair of aces. Jacquelyn Madlock dished out 32 assists to pace the offense, while Sydney Ottosen recorded 13 digs.
In their second match of the night, the Dolphins took a 1-0 lead against Queens by capturing the first set, 25-19. The Knights answered back with a 25-15 win in the second set. Le Moyne regained the lead with a 25-13 victory in the third set, but fell in the fourth set, 25-21, to force a decisive fifth set. The Dolphins won the match with a 15-7 win in the fifth set.
Casson picked up her first double-double of the campaign with a match-high 13 kills and 11 digs. Corcoran dished out 36 assists in the match and added seven digs, four kills, four blocks and two service aces. Porr led the defense with 21 digs, her 14th career match with at least 20 digs.
For the Knights, Nicoletta DiCocco and Lauren Kehoe recorded 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while each had seven digs and three block assists. Kristen Moore directed the offense with 35 assists. Ragina Anthony and Malaika Hollis led the defense with 18 and 14 digs, respectively.
Le Moyne (2-0), which swept its two matches on the opening day of the season for the second straight year, is back in action on Saturday at Molloy College against the host Lions at 10:00 a.m. and Post University at 12:00 p.m.
