Anna Hafoka (Hurst, Texas/L.D. Bell) registered 13 kills as the Le Moyne College volleyball team rallied from a 2-0 deficit for a 3-2 victory over The College of Saint Rose on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
With the victory, Le Moyne takes a 2-1 lead over the Golden Knights in the year-long "Upstate Challenge" between the two institutions. Since the inception of the "Upstate Challenge" in 2011, the institutions have each won three volleyball matches.
The Golden Knights used a 6-0 run late in the first set to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-21 victory. Saint Rose doubled its lead in the match with another 25-21 win in the second set. The Dolphins started their comeback with a 25-19 victory in the third set, which included an 8-3 run to close out the set. Le Moyne registered another 25-19 win in the fourth set, including a 5-0 closing run, to even the match at two apiece. After the teams split the first eight points of the fifth set, the Dolphins rattled off five straight points en route to a 15-9 win to capture the match.
Hafoka hit .346 en route to her 13 kills, which included four in the fifth set, while she also posted six digs and two blocks. Senior outside hitter
Natalie Casson (Kingman, Ariz./Kingman) recorded 11 kills, including four in the fourth set, and six digs. With her fifth kill of the match, Casson moved ahead of Gold Wave Hall of Fame member Staci Evans '97 and into eighth place on the program's all-time kills list with her 969th. Jacquelyne Ghindia (Mission Viejo, Calif./Santa Margarita) hit .350 en route to a season high-tying nine kills, while sophomore right side
Jessica Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) posted nine kills and five digs. Junior middle blocker
Danica Durdines (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos) registered a career-best .350 hitting percentage on her way to eight kills, while adding three blocks, the second of which allowed her to pass current graduate assistant coach
Bethany Fabian '13 for 16th on the program's total blocks list with her 127th. Junior setter
Kendall Corcoran (Fort Salonga, N.Y./Kings Park) tallied her team-best fifth double-double of the season with 45 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore libero
Mikayla Porr (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) led the Dolphins defensively with 17 digs, while senior defensive specialist
Maura Fay (Cornwall, N.Y./Cornwall) recorded 11 digs.
Maryellen Devic led the Golden Knights in the loss with a double-double of 23 kills and 17 digs, while adding a pair of blocks. The setting tandem of Sam Kubik and Erica Ziskin directed the offense with 24 and 23 assists, respectively, while chipping in with nine and eight digs, respectively. Samantha Atchinson added 16 digs in the setback.
Le Moyne (10-3, 2-0 NE-10), which has won three straight matches over the Golden Knights to take a 21-12 lead in the all-time series, is off for a week before hosting American International College at Fayetteville-Manlius High School next Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
