MEN’S SOCCER DRAWS WITH MERCY, 2-2, IN SEASON OPENER

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team scored the game's first two goals, but played to a 2-2 tie with Mercy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Dolphins took the lead just 10 and one-half minutes into the game. Following a corner kick by sophomore back Sam Daniel (Bonnyrigg, Midlothian/Lasswade/University of Mobile), senior back Ryan Matthews (Dublin, Ireland/Clonkeen College/Dublin Institute of Technology) collected the ball off a deflection and sent a pass to freshman forward Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule), who knocked home his first collegiate goal.

The Dolphins put five shots on target over the remainder of the opening half, but could not add to their lead.

Le Moyne took advantage of a Mercy foul seven and one-half minutes into the second half to double their lead. Off a free kick after Mercy goalkeeper Kwantarian Van Der Lara was issued a yellow card for an illegal tackle just outside the top of the penalty box, redshirt junior midfielder Marcello Palucci (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep/Florida International) curled a shot inside the top left corner of the net for his second goal as a Dolphin.

Mercy cut its deficit back to one only 6:24 later as Fredric Marcel slotted a shot from the right side into the lower left corner of the goal at the 58:56 mark.

The Mavericks evened the score at two apiece with just over six minutes remaining in the game. Off a throw-in by Donovan Cesar, Daniel Watson placed a shot into the lower left corner of the net.

Mercy kept up its pressure in the final minutes of regulation, but could not get either of its two shots past Le Moyne junior goalkeeper Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute).

Beaury turned away Mercy's only shot of the first overtime period, while all three of Le Moyne's attempts were wide of the frame.

The Dolphins got off four shots in the second overtime stanza, one of which had to be saved by Van Der Lara, but could not find the back of the net.

Beaury finished the game with four saves in between the pipes in his second career tie. Van Der Lara turned away nine shots to keep his team in the game. The Dolphins finished with a 21-12 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 margin in the first half, while posting a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.

Le Moyne (0-0-1), which tied its season opener for just the third time in the program's 52-year history and for the first time since the 2008 season, opens the home portion of its schedule on Monday against Daemen College at 2:00 p.m.
