Manchester, N.H. – Junior guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) made a lay-up with 12.6 seconds remaining to cap a 16-2 run as the Le Moyne College men's basketball team rallied for a 67-65 victory over Saint Anselm College on Tuesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium.
Le Moyne (12-3, 7-2 NE10), which has won eight straight games and is tied for fifth in this week's D2SIDA East Region Media Poll, trailed 63-51 with 6:39 remaining in the game before mounting its comeback, during which time Saint Anselm failed to make a field goal attempt over 12 possessions. Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) started the run with a conventional three-point play with 6:21 to go. Junior guard
Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) followed with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to six with 5:50 remaining. Following another Saint Anselm turnover, junior forward
Isaiah Eisendorf (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook/Gannon) drained a three-pointer from the right wing with 5:00 left as the shot clock expired. After the teams combined for five empty possessions over the next 90 seconds, Chambers recorded a steal and buried a three-pointer in transition with 3:22 to go to even the score at 63.
Saint Anselm regained its two-point lead with two free throws by Tim Guers over two trips to the foul line. Chambers answered back with 1:38 left by converting two foul shots to knot the game at 65. Following a turnover and a missed shot by the Hawks around an empty possession by the Dolphins, Le Moyne gained possession and called timeout with 31 seconds left. Out of the timeout, Sangster worked his way into the paint and connected on the go-ahead lay-up with 12.6 seconds left. After junior forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) blocked Taylor Fortin's jump shot out of bounds with 2.7 seconds left, a three-pointer from the top of the key by Guers was off the mark as time expired.
Chambers finished the game with a team-best 13 points, all of which he scored in the second half, while adding a pair of assists, steals and rebounds. Sangster registered 12 points, including eight in the first half, two rebounds and two assists. Eisendorf tallied 11 points and four steals, while senior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) turned in 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Chris Braley registered game-highs of 19 points and 15 rebounds in the defeat for the Hawks. Fortin finished with 17 points and seven assists, while Grant Mackay posted 10 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Sangster opened the game with the first five points before the Hawks answered with eight straight points, including four by Braley.
The Dolphins regained the lead with a 7-0 jaunt. Sophomore guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) nailed a three-pointer and converted a jumper before Eisendorf made a jump shot.
Following five straight points by the Hawks, the teams traded points over the next five minutes, which resulted in the Dolphins holding a 26-24 lead with 7:43 remaining in the half.
Saint Anselm tallied the next seven points and 15 of the last 21 points of the half to take a 39-32 lead into halftime. Fortin nailed a pair of three-pointers in the span, while Braley added five points.
After the teams split the first 12 points of the second half, the Hawks scored seven straight points and 12 of the next 16 to open up their largest lead of the game, 57-42, with 11:28 remaining. Fortin made a pair of three-pointers in the stretch, while Braley scored four points and Mackay had the other two.
The Dolphins pulled within 10 points on three occasions over the next three minutes before Fortin made a lay-up with 6:39 left. That basket would be the last of the game for the Hawks as the Dolphins responded with their 16-2 closing run.
The Dolphins, who defeated the Hawks in Manchester for the first time since January 17, 2009, are back in action on Saturday at Merrimack College at 3:00 p.m. The Warriors are ranked second in this week's D2SIDA poll.
