Syracuse, N.Y. – Daquaise Andrews tallied 24 points to lead Southern New Hampshire University to a 78-73 come-from-behind victory over the Le Moyne College men's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night at Ted Grant Court.
The Penmen (14-4, 10-3 NE10) entered the contest ranked third in this week's D2SIDA East Region Media Poll, while the Dolphins (14-5, 9-4 NE10) were ranked fourth.
Sophomore guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) led four Dolphins in double figures with 15 points, 13 of which he scored in the first half. Senior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) posted 14 points and a team-high six rebounds. Junior guard
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) and junior forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon) came off the bench to record 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Andrews, a member of the NE10 All-Rookie Team last year, tallied 16 of his game-high point total after halftime, while adding nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. Devin Gilligan recorded 12 of his 21 points in the second half, while posting five rebounds. Dimitri Floras tallied 10 points, while Chris Walters pulled down a game-best 10 rebounds to go along with seven points, including the 1000th of his career.
The Penmen opened the game with the first seven points and 12 of the first 15 over the opening 6:07 of the contest. Following 2:41 of scoreless play to start the game, Andrews made a fast-break lay-up and then buried a three-pointer 59 seconds later. Gilligan pushed the lead to seven with a fast-break three-pointer before Asuncion-Byrd drained a three-pointer to get the Dolphins on the scoreboard 5:02 into the game. Gilligan followed with a three-pointer and then Walters converted a lay-up to force a Le Moyne timeout.
Following back-and-forth play over the next four minutes led to a 19-12 SNHU lead, Hyland drained a three-pointer and made a lay-up around a lay-up by Asuncion-Byrd to get the Dolphins within two with 9:01 left in the half.
Andrews followed two free throws each from Gilligan and Hyland to put the Penmen back up by five (26-21) with six and one-half minutes left in the half.
The Dolphins, who hit 9-of-14 three-point attempts in the first half, responded with 23 of the final 28 points of the half to take a 44-31 lead into the intermission. Junior guard
Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) nailed a pair of three-pointers in the streak, Buczek also tallied six points, including the final five, and Asuncion-Byrd ignited the run with a three-pointer and later put the Dolphins in front with a lay-up.
After Buczek started the scoring in the second half with a lay-up, the Penmen tallied 11 of the next 16 points to get within single digits with 15:23 to play. Gilligan and Floras opened with three-pointers, Andrews made a lay-up, Floras converted one of his own and then Andrews made a free throw to make the score 51-42.
Kaigler scored twice in the paint 60 seconds apart to push Le Moyne's margin back to 13, but the Penmen ran off seven straight points and 10 of the next 12 to get within five with 11:08 to play. Charlie Russo (CBA) hit a three-pointer in the stretch, while Gilligan capped the stretch with a free throw for his third point of the span.
The Dolphins got a lay-up from Asuncion-Byrd and a three-pointer by Hyland around a jumper by Adrian Oliveira to go back up by eight, but Southern New Hampshire tallied 10 straight points to take the lead. Russo started the comeback with a three-pointer, Andrews made a jumper, Gilligan tied the score with a three-pointer from the right wing and then Andrews had a put-back dunk for a 64-62 edge with 7:31 remaining.
After junior guard
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) tied the score with two free throws with 7:13 to play, Andrews scored five straight points over 1:56 to give the Penmen the lead for good.
Sangster made four free throws in 36 seconds to get the Dolphins within 69-68 with 4:00 left, but the Penmen tallied the next five points. Andrews made a lay-up, Gilligan converted a free throw with 3:00 left and then Walter made two foul shots with 1:56 to go.
Chambers made a three-pointer and Buczek answered a Gilligan lay-up with one of his own to get the Dolphins within 76-73 with 56 seconds left, but they would not score again. SNHU turned the ball over with 27 seconds left, but Hyland's jumper with 13 seconds left was off the mark and corralled by Walters. Oliveira finished off the game's scoring by making two foul shots with nine ticks left.
Le Moyne, which fell at home for the first time after winning its first seven games at Ted Grant Court, concludes crossover action on Saturday at Franklin Pierce University at 3:30 p.m.
