Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior forward
Stan Buczek (Port Jervis, N.Y./Burke Catholic) registered a three-point play with 7.1 seconds remaining to give the Le Moyne College men's basketball team, the 10th-ranked team in the latest D2SIDA East Regional rankings, a 69-68 victory over Stonehill College, the ninth-ranked team in the region, on Wednesday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
Buczek finished the contest with a game-high 19 points, including 10 in the first half, while adding three rebounds and a pair of steals. Junior guards
Russell Sangster (Rockville, Md./Bullis School) and
Tyree Chambers (Bayreuth, Germany/Graf-Münster Gymnasium/Providence) each recorded 11 points and two rebounds, while classmate
Tanner Hyland (South Portland, Maine/South Portland/Bridgton Academy) contributed 10 points, three assists and two rebounds.
Ryan Logan led the Skyhawks in the loss with 17 points and four rebounds. KJ Lee added 12 points, four rebounds and three assists, while Isaiah Bess posted 10 points and four rebounds. Daniel Largey came off the bench to record 10 points.
The Skyhawks jumped out to an 8-4 lead at the 16:22 mark of the first half following six straight points, four of which were scored by Lee.
The Dolphins answered with an 8-2 spurt, capped by back-to-back Chambers three-pointers, to take a 12-10 lead with 12:42 remaining in the half.
Following back-and-forth play over the next two and one-half minutes, the Dolphins tallied nine of the next 13 points to take their largest lead of the game, 25-19, with 7:49 to go in the half. Buczek scored six of the points, while Chambers added a conventional three-point play.
Stonehill (9-5, 4-4 NE10) answered with 13 consecutive points and 17 of the last 22 points of the half to take a 36-30 lead into halftime. Logan scored seven points in the 13-0 run and eight total points in the closing span, which was capped by a Largey three-pointer with 36 seconds left in the half. Hyland responded with a three-pointer of his own to conclude the scoring in the half.
The Dolphins opened the scoring in the second half with the first four points to get within two points with 18:27 left.
After back-and-forth action over the next six minutes, with Stonehill's lead bouncing between two and five points, the Skyhawks used a 6-2 spurt to take a 53-46 lead with 11:05 remaining.
Le Moyne rattled off the next 11 points to regain the lead. Junior guard
Anthony Richards (New Castle, Pa./New Castle/West Virginia Wesleyan) started the run with a three-pointer, sophomore guard
C.J. Asuncion-Byrd (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich/St. Thomas More/Gannon) drained a three-pointer from the left corner and then Hyland put the Dolphins in front with a three-pointer from the right wing in transition. Hyland then capped the streak with a jumper in the paint with 7:29 remaining.
Following six points from each team over the next two minutes, the Skyhawks tallied eight straight points to take the lead back. Will Moreton buried a three-pointer to trim the team's deficit to one, Logan registered a conventional three-point play for the lead with 3:38 remaining and then Logan hit a jumper in the paint.
After free throws by Sangster and Bess made the score 68-64 with 1:32 remaining, the Dolphins tallied the final five points of the game. Out of a timeout after a Logan turnover, Chambers converted a lay-up off a feed from junior forward
Daniel Kaigler (Syracuse, N.Y./Bishop Ludden/Gannon). Following a missed lay-up by the Skyhawks, Buczek tied the score with 7.1 seconds left by converting a lay-up on the right side, while drawing contract, off a high-low pass by Kaigler. Buczek drained the ensuing free throw to give the Dolphins the lead.
Out of a Stonehill timeout, Logan attempted a three-pointer from the top of the key, but Kaigler was able to block the shot to end the game.
Le Moyne (10-3, 5-2 NE10), which has won six straight games for the first time since February 2010, is back in action on Saturday against Assumption College at 2:00 p.m.
