WOMEN’S BASKETBALL REGISTERS 60-50 VICTORY OVER STONEHILL

Syracuse, N.Y. – Freshman guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) scored 17 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 60-50 win over Stonehill College on Wednesday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.

Roberts, who tallied nine of her points in the second half, added six rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) registered her team-best fourth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, eight of which came in the third quarter.

Courtney Walsh led the Skyhawks in the loss with 18 points, 11 of which she scored in the second half.

Stonehill opened the game with seven of the first nine points to take its largest lead of the game at the 7:06 mark. Kate Ross made a jumper for the first points of the game and Walsh put the Skyhawks up 7-2 with a three-pointer.

The Dolphins answered with a 12-4 run to take the lead for the first time. Roberts started the run with a three-pointer, Dobrovosky made two free throws and then sophomore guard Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) tied the score at nine with a lay-up. After the game was tied at 11, Purcell drained a three-pointer with 3:57 left to give the Dolphins the lead.

The teams traded points over the final 3:42 of the quarter as the Dolphins held a 16-13 lead after 10 minutes.

The Skyhawks regained the lead with the first four points of the second quarter. Maty Diabate made a jumper and Samantha Hyslip made one of her own to put Stonehill in front, 17-16, with 8:09 remaining in the half.

Le Moyne regained the lead for good with the next six points. Roberts drilled a three-pointer and then freshman forward Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) registered a conventional three-point play.

Following a 4-0 spurt by Stonehill to get within one, the Dolphins tallied nine of the last 11 points of the half to take a 31-23 lead into halftime. Junior guard Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) recorded five of the points in the stretch, which was capped by two free throws by Roberts.

The Dolphins opened the second half with an 8-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 39-25, with 5:33 remaining. Four different players each scored two points in the stretch for the Dolphins.

Stonehill got within 11 on a pair of occasions over the remainder of the quarter, but the Dolphins took a 13-point lead (44-31) into the final quarter.

The Skyhawks scored five of the first six points of the fourth quarter to trim their deficit to 45-39, but the Dolphins responded with a 7-2 run to retake a 14-point advantage.

Stonehill got within nine one last time, 57-48, with 28 seconds left before the Dolphins made three free throws to put the game away.

Le Moyne (8-5, 4-3 NE10), which has defeated Stonehill in back-to-back regular seasons for just the second time (1999-2000 and 2000-01) in 21 seasons in the NE10, returns to the hardwood on Saturday against Assumption College at 12:00 p.m.
