WOMEN’S BASKETBALL GRINDS OUT 48-42 VICTORY OVER ASSUMPTION

Syracuse, N.Y. – Senior guard Ailayia Demand (Watervliet, N.Y./Watervliet) tallied 12 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 48-42 win over Assumption College in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Ted Grant Court.

Demand registered eight of her team-high point total in the first half, while adding three rebounds. Freshman guard McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied 10 points, including eight in the second half, three assists, three rebounds and two steals. Juniors Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) each posted lines of eight points, six rebounds and four steals, while Leszyk added four assists and two blocked shots.

Kelly Carey led the Greyhounds with 15 points, including 10 in the second half.

After Carey got the Greyhounds on the scoreboard with a three-pointer for a 3-2 lead, the Dolphins answered with a 9-2 run to take the lead for good. Dobrovosky scored the first four points, Demand nailed a three-pointer and then Dobrovosky converted a jump shot for an 11-5 lead with 3:49 to go in the first quarter.

The Greyhounds scored the final three points of the quarter to get within 11-8 after 10 minutes.

Carey started the scoring in the second quarter to get her team within 11-10, the Dolphins rattled off the next 10 points over 4:51. Roberts started the run with a lay-up, Demand made a three-pointer and a free throw and Leszyk capped the streak with a lay-up.

Assumption tallied eight of the last 11 points over the final 2:40 to get within 24-18 at halftime. Allison Stoddard made a pair of three-pointers and then Morgan O'Donnell finished off the half's scoring with a lay-up.

For the third straight quarter, Carey started her team's scoring, this time with a lay-up to get the Greyhounds within 24-20. The Dolphins answered with a 9-2 run, including six straight points on the backend, to take an 11-point lead. Roberts tallied five of the points, while Demand and Leszyk each scored two.

The Greyhounds got a lay-up from O'Donnell and a three-pointer from Carey to get within 33-27, but junior forward Nicole Riddick (Albany, N.Y./Colonie/UMass Lowell) knocked down a jump shot to put the Dolphins up 35-27 after three quarters.

Assumption scored the first four points of the fourth quarter on a three-pointer by Abby McKanna and a free throw by Carey to cut their deficit in half.

Le Moyne countered with an 8-2 streak to regain its double-digit lead. Roberts made a lay-up, Leszyk hit two jumpers in the paint and Dobrovosky scored the eventual game-winning point with lay-up with 2:30 remaining.

The Greyhounds made one final run with nine of the next 10 points to get within two points with 18.1 seconds left. Jo Impellizeri made two lay-ups, Carey converted two foul shots and Stoddard made three free throws, the last two of which came with 18.1 seconds left to make the score 44-42.

Demand converted two foul shots with 15 seconds left and junior forward Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) finished off the game's scoring with two free throws with four seconds remaining.

Le Moyne (9-5, 5-3 NE10), which has won three straight regular season games against Assumption for the first time in its 21 seasons in the NE10, is back in action on Tuesday at Saint Anselm College at 5:30 p.m.
