Manchester, N.H. – The Le Moyne College men's soccer team got two saves from senior goalkeeper
Ben Beaury (Cohoes, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) and converted all four of its penalty kicks to defeat Southern New Hampshire University in a shootout, 4-2, in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Championships. The teams were forced to go to a shootout to determine the advancing team after playing to a scoreless draw through 110 minutes.
The fifth-seeded Dolphins (11-4-3) advance to Friday's NE10 Championships semifinals and will host eighth-seeded Bentley University at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons advanced to the semifinals with a 2-1 upset victory at top-seeded Adelphi University. The Dolphins and Falcons just played their regular-season contest last Friday and Bentley was victorious, 2-1, to clinch the final NE10 berth.
The Dolphins improve to 3-0 in shootouts against the Penmen over the last nine years. The Dolphins defeated the Penmen, 3-2, in the 2009 NCAA East Region Championship game and then posted a 4-1 shootout win in the 2010 NE10 Championship quarterfinals.
On the first shot of the penalty kicks, Beaury denied a shot by Alex Satrustegui. First-year graduate student forward
Marek Weber (Fulda, Germany/Sportgymnasium Jena/Goethe-University Frankfurt) followed for the Dolphins and buried his attempt to give his team a 1-0 lead. After Olafur Einarsson converted for the Penmen, sophomore midfielder
Salar Faryar (Frankfurt, Germany/Max-Eyth Schule) drilled his attempt to give the Dolphins a 2-1 advantage. Tom Marriott evened the shootout at 2-2, but first-year graduate student back
Niklas Breunung (Fulda, Germany/Freiherr-vom-Stein Schule Fulda/Hochschule Fulda/University of Applied Sciences) answered with a conversion to give the Dolphins the lead back. Beaury then rejected Claude Diesse to keep the Dolphins in front. Junior midfielder
Sam Daniel (Bonnyrigg, Scotland/Lasswade/University of Mobile) clinched the shootout victory by making his attempt for the 4-2 win.
Each team registered five shots on goal in the first half, but the goalkeepers were able to save each attempt. The best scoring chance of the half came at the 30:31 mark as Weber headed the ball at the right post off a corner kick from the left flag. The ball partially crossed the goal line, but SNHU goalkeeper Daniel Milton, who was replaced in net for the shootout, kept it from completely crossing the line.
The Penmen recorded five of the six shots on goal in the second half, but Beaury was able to keep all five out to keep the game tied at zero.
SNHU had a chance to win the game with just over one minute remaining in the first overtime period, but Beaury was able to stop a shot by Satrustegui at the top of the penalty box.
Only one shot was taken in the second overtime period, but it was blocked by a Le Moyne defender before it could make its way to the net.
Beaury registered 11 saves over the 110 minutes to record his 28th career shutout. The 11 saves are the second-most in a game in Beaury's 75-game career with his career high of 12 coming against the Penmen on September 16. Milton finished with six saves over the 110 minutes. Southern New Hampshire posted a 17-12 advantage in shots, while Le Moyne took six of the game's eight corner kicks.
