Garden City, N.Y. – Fallyn Stephens scored 21 points to lead Adelphi University to a 60-52 win over the Le Moyne College women's basketball team in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday evening at the Center for Recreation and Sports.
Junior guard
Madison Purcell (Clifton Park, N.Y./Catholic Central) and sophomore guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) led the Dolphins in the setback with 10 points apiece, while Purcell dished out six assists and grabbed four rebounds. Senior forward
Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East) tallied 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
Stephens connected on five three-pointers in the contest and tallied 16 of her points after halftime. The starting backcourt of Niajah Morgan and Simone Hobdy each posted 10 points and three assists, while Hobdy added eight rebounds.
The Panthers opened the game with the first 13 points over the initial 4:08. Morgan had the first eight points, Jess Camarda nailed a three-pointer and then Emily Miccile made a pair of foul shots.
The teams traded points over the final five minutes of the quarter as the Panthers took a 19-7 lead into the second quarter.
After the Dolphins scored the first two points of the second quarter to get within 19-9, the Panthers scored nine straight points to open up a 19-point lead with 4:02 left in the half. Camarda hit another three-pointer, Morgan converted a lay-up and Katie Murphy followed with two lay-ups for a 28-9 lead.
Roberts made a lay-up as time expired in the half to get the Dolphins within 33-18 at halftime.
Hobdy made two shots and Stephens drained three three-pointers in the first 3:42 of the third quarter to give Adelphi its largest lead of the game, 46-21.
The Dolphins answered with a 15-4 run to trim their deficit down to 14 with 3:05 left in the period. Purcell led the run with a pair of three-pointers and a lay-up, while Roberts added a three-pointer and Webster capped the run with a lay-up.
Hobdy ended the quarter's scoring with a lay-up to give Adelphi a 52-36 lead after three quarters.
After the teams split the first eight points of the fourth quarter over the opening four minutes, the Dolphins rattled off 10 straight points to get within six with 1:43 to play. Webster started the run with a lay-up, senior forward
Joanna Dobrovosky (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) followed with two lay-ups and Roberts knocked down a jumper to make the score 56-50.
After a Hobdy free throw, Purcell made two of her own to get the Dolphins within five, 57-52, with 39 seconds left, but Hobdy (2) and Camarda (1) closed out the game's scoring from the foul line.
Le Moyne (2-3, 1-2 NE10), which has dropped six of its last seven matchups at Adelphi, visits Daemen College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
