Amherst, N.Y. – Senior guard
Ellie Leszyk (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Le Moyne College women's basketball team to a 67-55 win over Daemen College in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.
Leszyk, whose previous career high of 19 came against Southern New Hampshire on January 24, 2017, registered 15 of her game-high point total in the second half, while adding three rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Sophomore guard
McKayla Roberts (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) tallied 20 points, including 12 in the first half, six assists and five rebounds. Senior
Courtney Webster (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East), who made her first start of the season, posted 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Jordan Heinold led the Wildcats in the loss with 20 points, including 11 in the second half, and five assists. Sarah Saba and Sydney Jones each turned in 10 points.
After the teams went back and forth over the opening seven minutes of the game, which resulted in a 9-8 Le Moyne lead, the Dolphins scored the final 11 points of the quarter. Roberts buried a pair of three-pointers around a jumper by freshman guard
Gabriella Badway (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) before Leszyk ended the quarter with a three-pointer.
Following a jumper by sophomore
Colleen Corcoran (Beverly, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) to give the Dolphins a 24-10 lead with 6:58 left in the second quarter, the Wildcats scored 10 straight points to get back within four. After a jumper by Sarah Young, Heinold hit a pair of three-pointers around a jumper by Saba.
The Dolphins scored eight of the last 12 points of the half to take a 32-24 lead into the intermission. Webster made a jumper and then Roberts and Leszyk drained three-pointers.
The teams alternated points in the third quarter as Le Moyne's lead bounced between five and 10 points and settled at eight (48-40) after 30 minutes of play.
The first six minutes of the fourth quarter was more of the same as Le Moyne maintained a lead between five and 10 points.
After Heinold hit a three-pointer to get the Wildcats within 58-51 with 4:27 left, the Dolphins scored the next five points and nine of the next 11 to take their largest lead of the game. Roberts scored six of the points, while Leszyk added three free throws.
Le Moyne (3-3), which improves to 4-0 against the Wildcats since Daemen joined NCAA Division II in 2013, returns to Northeast-10 Conference action on Wednesday against The College of Saint Rose at 5:00 p.m.
