Syracuse, N.Y. – Sophomore middle blocker
Jacquelyne Ghindia (Mission Viejo, Calif./ Santa Margarita) landed a career-best 21 kills to lead the Le Moyne College volleyball team to a 3-2 upset victory over Bentley University on Friday evening in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Court.
After the teams split the first 32 points in the opening set, the Dolphins took the lead with three straight points and then closed out the set with the final two points for a 25-21 win. The Dolphins used a 6-0 run to jump out to a 10-4 lead in the second set. After the teams split the next 24 points, resulting in a 22-16 Le Moyne lead, the Falcons put together runs of 4-0 and 5-0 around a Le Moyne point for a 25-23 victory. After Bentley led for the majority of the third set, including 17-12, the Dolphins used a 6-1 run to knot the score at 18. Following ties at 19, 21, 22, 23 and 24, the Dolphins recorded back-to-back kills for a 26-24 victory. The Dolphins used a 3-0 run in the fourth set to take a 20-17 lead, but the Falcons rattled off four straight points and eight of the last 10 for a 25-22 win to stay alive in the match. After Bentley scored to cut its deficit to 8-6 in the fifth set, the Dolphins recorded four straight points en route to a 15-9 win to close out the match.
Ghindia, who had the second-most kills by a Le Moyne middle blocker over the last 15 seasons and the most since Morgan McDermott posted 23 on October 22, 2011, hit .465 en route to her 21 kills, while committing just one error. She had five kills in each of the first and second sets and four kills in each of the third and fifth sets. Senior middle blocker
Danica Durdines (Alta Loma, Calif./Los Osos) slammed down 19 kills and posted a .385 hitting percentage, while adding five digs, two service aces and two blocks in her second-to-last career home match. She landed six kills in six attempts in the third set and tallied five kills in the fourth set. Junior right side
Jessica Miller (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) registered seven of her 17 kills (against just two errors) in the opening set and hit .357 in the match, while adding four digs. Her 11th kill gave her 900 for her career and her 16th moved her passed Jody Hammond '07 for 11th place on the program's all-time kills chart. Junior outside hitter
Anna Hafoka (Hurst, Texas/L.D. Bell) was the fourth Dolphin with double-digit kills with 13, while adding seven digs. Freshman setter
Emily Yancone (Rochester, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy) and senior
Kendall Corcoran (Fort Salonga, N.Y./Kings Park) facilitated the offense with 35 and 31 assists, respectively. Yancone posted her first career double-double with 16 digs, while Corcoran, who dished out the 3100th assist of her career with her 26th of the match, recorded her team high-tying eighth double-double of the year with 14 digs. Mikayla Porr (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) led the Dolphins defensively with 30 digs, while adding six assists. Sophomore defensive specialist
Claire Hiwiller (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Sweet Home) tallied a career-high 26 digs, while junior outside hitter
Marguerite Dillon (Oswego, N.Y./Oswego) contributed a career-best 24 digs to go along with three kills and two service aces.
Dani Milner led the Falcons in the loss with a double-double of 20 kills and 22 digs. She tallied six kills in each of the third and fourth set. Rachel Bruno registered 15 kills and hit .387, while posting four digs and four blocks. Xio Lopp and Isabella Perez split the setting duties with 27 and 24 assists, respectively, while Lopp posted five digs, five blocks and four kills and Perez added 10 digs. Celia Cristofoli tied Milner for the team lead in digs with 22. Shannon Kelly and Emily Barthelmes contributed 19 and 17 digs, respectively.
Le Moyne (12-11, 5-6 NE10), which defeated the Falcons for the second straight year after dropping the previous 17 matches, closes out its home schedule on Saturday against Stonehill College at 11:00 a.m. Prior to the match, Corcoran and Durdines will be honored by the Dolphin Athletic Association for their contributions to the program.
